Hardy Fox, a driving force behind the Residents, an avant-garde band that playfully subverted the conventions of rock music for decades while insisting on anonymity, which the group maintained by performing in outlandish costumes, died on Oct. 30 at his home in San Anselmo, Calif. He was 73.

Sounds like it was a kooky, experimental, fun & entertaining band.
An acquired taste. B-52’s meet Devo meet Dire Straits maybe
San Anselmo is just a hoot and a holler away from me in Marin County. I’ve never heard of them. Of course when they started in the 70’s I lived in mostly Ohio.

It was tough sledding to be a fan. But they always had a sense of humor, and were quite groundbreaking in their use of technology.

His husband, Steven Kloman, said the cause was glioblastoma.

I didn't know he was married.

Me neither. I just looked it up. Turns out he did some voice work for the “Freak Show”(one of the earliest CD-ROM games ever).

Still have some Residents vinyl albums...haven’t played them for years, though...notes beat noise these days for me... R.I.P. all the same.

Fantastic band. Saw them live once, I think.

Saw them live once

That's how I got turned on to them. I had gone to Lincoln Center to see some Russian folk singer or something - turns out he was their opening act.

Totally knocked our socks off. It later it dawned on me they were among the earliest music videos on TV (USA's night flight used to show them).

“ (USA’s night flight used to show them).”

That’s pretty much where I first saw them, I think. The Residents led me to Snakefinger, who led me to....

But then I was a huge Captain Beefheart fan.

I got to see Beefheart once, too. The Doc at the Radar Station tour.

Very cool. I never saw him live but caught Zappa in Chicago nearly every Mother’s Day for 5 years.

Only saw Zappa once - it was Halloween at I think the Beacon Theater in NYC?

I really should write these things down somewhere while I can still remember them.

He always played small venues here in Chicago. The Uptown was one he played frequently. I may still have an old t shirt from one of his shows laying around somewhere.

I have a cedar trunk full of old concert tees in the attic somewhere. I should drag them out next family gathering.

You know, kind of like showing vacation slides to a captive audience :)

That is a great idea. Wish I had all the ones I’d collected over the years. I bet they’d be worth a few bucks now

Zeppelin
The Stones
Yes
ELP
Zappa
Tull
Bad Company
Santana

I’d need a pretty big trunk. LOL

Best,

L

Never got to see The Residents live, but I had a few of their albums. Very strange and different, but some of it quite good. I used to bug people I didn’t like by playing them on cassette in the car.

My daughter once challenged me to a weird music showdown. She conceded defeat when I pulled up some Trout Mask Beefheart. Didn’t even make it to The Residents.
