Our date with destiny was set long ago, when statesmen like Adams declared a republican form of government was suitable only for those who possessed high moral standards.
What the founders alluded to, yet really did quite state clearly, was that it was inevitable that such an obvious target would attract constant and persistent attacks. If the crux of a democratic representative republic was the franchise, then it was an easy process to dilute. Universal suffrage was the objective, and once achieved, the die was cast.
So here we are, reaping the rewards of a system so corrupt that it hardly bears any resemblance to an actual, working government. This is what the royalists objected to: that eventually, rule of man would subsume all rationality in the name of such rubrics as equality & fairness, which in turn would overwhelm all attempts at maintaining the rule of law.
In actuality, this isn't exactly rocket science. Educated persons who have studied history, government & philosophy know the story has repeated many, many times before. It's just the conceit of every generation that they believe their experiences to be somehow unique. Too bad we will all find out the hard way.
