Do You Agree? ‘Exorcist’ Ranked Greatest Horror Movie Of All-Time
Study Finds ^ | 10/31/18 | Ben Renner

Happy Halloween! With Michael Myers returning to the big screen just in time for his favorite holiday this year, it’s as good a time as ever to poll Americans on their most beloved horror movies of all-time. A new survey finds that despite the many heart-pounding fright flicks that have spooked moviegoers in recent years, you’ll have to turn back the clock for the scariest films ever.

The survey of 2,000 American adults, commissioned by video streaming service Vudu, had few surprises. Americans agreed that the most horrifying film ever created was The Exorcist, followed by the first iterations of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Rounding out the top five, perhaps unexpectedly for some, was the 2013 haunted house nightmare The Conjuring — the only horror film made in the past 30 years to make the top five.

Meanwhile, when it came to the most popular horror villain, it was no surprise either that the man who sets out to haunt nightmares, Freddy Krueger, of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, took the top spot. Michael Myers from Halloween came in second, followed by Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

You can’t really understand the draw until you see it. The Exorcist is well plotted and worth a viewing.

“Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” all the way...

Dr. Nokitofa: Technically sir, tomatoes are fags.

Dr. Morrison: He means fruits

But it’s scary. I don’t really do scary movies.

Agree that Psycho has to be the best ever.

At the time, killing off your leading lady in the first 30 minutes was unheard of. So much so that Hitchcock financed the movie himself. Period. Everything.

In the shower scene, the knife was never seen penetrating the victim. All the violence was completed in the mind of the viewer.

Easily one of the best movies ever, of any genre.

[The Town That Dreaded Sundown.]

I drove thru Texarkana at night when I moved to Texas last year. I was thinking about that movie.

The Exorcist wins as the pre-eminent horror movie of all time. William Peter Blatty was attending Georgetown and came across a pamphlet about an actual exorcism which triggered his writing of the novel. Blatty has also criticized Georgetown----the first Catholic college in America----of not adhering to Catholic teaching. The legend is that when some students arrive they dont know its a Catholic school......but do they know it when they leave?

====================================

The magic of Hollywood---they actually used a Linda Blair lookalike puppet in some scenes.

Jason Miller---a Pulitzer prize-winning playwright---- played a great part. Such a horrific ending.

I know one could call it Sci fi but I think Alien was number 1 in horror for me...in terms of pure dark atmosphere, creepiness, and even chains and water dripping as well as the sounds of salivary dribbling; Alien was number 1 for me.

“Here kitty....meow...here kitty...what ...arrggggh!”
I still remember the dolby surround theater I saw it in with chains just clinking off into the sonic distance or the self destruct activation sequence...”The ships self destruct system has been activated...you have thirty minutes to reach minimum safe distance...with a blurr of lights and rushes of venting steam and various alarms...and the creepy alien peering into the box where the cat had been stored....

Quack off, bird brain. Howard the Duck was a great movie adaptation of a fantastic comic book. They had awesome special effects and an 800 number you could call to hear pithy quotes from a duck that was trapped in a world he never made. Disney was responsible for the look of Howard after they sued Marvel over resemblances to Donald. Otherwise it would have been much better. The comic book was ground breaking, introducing such villains as The Black Hole (the Black Hole sucks!) and The Entropists (Entropy, entropy, all winds down).

Psycho is the best; it had creepy scenes throughout the movie and music that chilled your bones at the proper times.
