I have the free versions now. It would just be for my laptop. If not Malwarebytes and/or Avast, what is your suggestion. Budget is a consideration.

They value price pretty well. Still a little bloated but better and I think it works well. We (knock on wood) haven’t had a virus problem in 6 years since we bought the 10 pack.
Is there an annual cost for Norton? If so, how much?
MalwareBytes and Avast are the ONLY anti-virus I have used for well over a decade and I have never gotten hit with anything they could not fix.
I support then and purchased the products BECAUSE the free version worked so well.
They are not a ‘waste of money’ they have some useful additional features which I like a lot. (you don’t need them at all, but they are like the leather seats and tinted windows on a car- nice features to have)
I supported them and bought them because after a decade of great service I felt like I should. I’d like them to stay in business.
You’re free to feel otherwise-I use my computers for a living so it means a lot more to me than others, probably.
Just use the built-in Windows defender and don't do anything stupid.
- Never click a link in an e-mail you don't trust. Type the address of the site yourself instead.
- Never open an attachment from a source you do not trust. Many e-mail providers already scan attachments but still do not open attachments unless you are sure of the source.
- Stay away from sites that are known to cause problems, i.e. many porn sites and any site in an e-mail or online add that looks questionable.
I have never had any virus or malware on a computer. I work in IT and use computers 16 hours/day and have owned computers since 1985.
I agree with Mr. K's statements -- it's handled anything I've encountered. Staying away from hazardous parts of the internet helps too. $:-)
Avast also has some nice system cleanup and tuneup tools in their paid version, but there are other freeware apps for those functions.
The free Avira antivirus is a great option, too.

I have had Avast and it was too confining. It didn’t let me do anything without getting permission.
The computer fix it place (the tech) told me he uses Windows for his security. I tried it and felt I was open. Probably not, but I have Mcafee on my computers now because ATT offers it free with their package.
I don’t trust any of them completely... I don’t leave my computers on like I used to.
Avast and Malwarebytes are the best tools to keep your computer safe.
I do pay for the Top-of-the-line version of ZoneAlarm though.

Switch to Linux Mint and solve 90% of Windows problems. I did it 4 years ago and don’t miss Windows on bit except for the occasional use of Skype which I keep on my Windows XP computer in the office which I rarely even turn on. In fact I bet it has been 7 months since I last fired that one up.
I used to pay for McAffee for several years and only got about 1 virus a year. I traded it for the free Malwarbytes and have had no virus in 11 years. I received an offer of lifetime Malwarebytes premium on a Nothing-But-Software email for 12.95 and said what the hell and bought it. I still haven’t had any virus and it now updates itself.
Switch to another OS like Mac or Linux and malware will become a thing of the past.
I use no virus protection and have had only one problem in 10 or so years. I use Acronis backup. Images infrequently, file backups frequently. With the problem I mentioned I restored from an image backup and then restored from the most recent file backup.
I back up on a USB-connected drive that I only connect when doing a backup (or restore).
