Personally I think Nirvana was one of the last great rock bands. I’m not sure how you define “objectively superior”. As one of my college music teachers defined it, music is the art of affecting people emotionally with sound. So “better” is always subjective to some degree. More complex, technically challenging to play, isn’t necessarily better. Some of the best music is very simple.
That said, I hate the homogenized, compressed pop shlock on the radio these days. It’s not that there aren’t excellent bands and artists out there, it’s just that they don’t become huge stars anymore for the most part. At best they gain a large cult following.

Music died when JJ Cale did.
Not idiots, businessmen. As the video talks about, the cost of promotion is so great now they won’t take chances by trying anything new, just like movies. It’s all about the bottom line. Making money is what drives them, not making great music.
Tom Petty told the story of when he made “The Last DJ”. He played the record for a room full of record company execs, and said you could hear a pin drop afterward. Finally one of them said “That’s not about us is it?”
You are correct, my bad
“didya get any onya?”
Brrrrrr ..!
Bighead Todd and the Monsters is a prime example, excellentt band that gets Zero airplay.
Actually, 3 chords are all you need and sometimes 2 will suffice!

Buckethead?
More like great taste in rock n roll. Besides the intro, the bridge with Richards and Taylor exchanging riffs and then coming together on certain chords and then lead again was truly genius. Always amazed me that Mick Taylor left the Stones. He added a lot to the Jagger/Richards sound.
Interestingly, the drums are so simple in Gimme Shelter. But then that has always been Charlie Watts style. Also, think Zepplin's "Whole Lotta Love" drums as they head into another verse. Pah, pah, pah, pah, pah, pah was nothing for a drummer, but Bonham pulled the timing off along with John Paul Jones coming in on base. Of course Bonham was one of the greatest rock drummers ever in many of their other songs. I'm probably one of the few who enjoyed their last album, "In Through The Out Door".
Another group whose drummer was under-appreciated was Ginger Baker with his duel base drums in Cream. Not sure, but believe they were the first hard rock band. Think "Sunshine of Your Love" while others were playing "Strawberry Fields Forever" or "I'm a Believer" bubblegum. Pfft. My wife loves that Flower Power crap, but gotta go with the flow and some were not so bad.
Thanks for the conversation. Disco, Rap, and Pop sucks! I'd rather listen to soft-rock like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, or Bob Seger any time over the current blsnd stuff, even if not my favorite.
As Lynard Skynard says. "Turn It Up!"
Thank you for reminding me why I couldn't stand 60's bubblegum.
Uh, I kinda like some of Yanni's big orchestra stuff. Yes, it's pop, but kinda gets you going. Try it sometime. Definitely not Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Strauss, but for modern ears, it can work. It's definitely not 3 chord arrangements like rock. Check out his Acropolis or Tribute albums. Huge orchestral productions.
If you have one musical bone in your body, you'll enjoy or at least appreciate them. They're like 25 years old now are still as full filling as back then. Sure he's done more, but lost track.

Hey a couple suggestions if you want to check out some new bands with the old vibe.
First is Blackberry Smoke. They are a country tinged southern rock type band with some great tunes. Album called “The Whippoorwil” is my favorite.
Another newer band you might like is Greta Van Fleet. They sound just like Zeppelin but have some great songs on their EP which is called Greta Van Fleet.
I sure wish there was a new band with the 80’s hairband vibe that I could get into. I did listen to the new Judas Priest album on Amazon which came out in March. Very good with some old school Priest riffs. Priest and Deep Purple were here at one of our local venues a couple of weeks ago but I couldn’t make it. I did see Foreigner and Tesla Labor day weekend which was an awesome show. I also saw Mettallica the same week. Good week of shows for me.
"Hysteria" is one of my all time favorite rock ballads. Their drummer had only one arm at that time, but listen to what he does. Nothing fancy, just hits the right drum at the right time, or stops at the right time. Saw them live some years back but too far away to see how he set up his kit for one arm. Guess I could Google.
I’ll check them out. Thank you.
Just listened to Greta Van Fleet. Yes, they do sound like Zepplin. So what! They rock and it’s time for that sound to come back around. However, the lead singer and the band could be a “cover” band for Zepplin, they’re so much alike. The drummer even has the same kit as Bonham. But sounded like the old rock I love.
