...Altaif Hassan, a senior at the college, and freshman Giovanna Roberson were pulled over by police on Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the school's Mimosa Hall, according to NBC Philadelphia. Glassboro Police Department received a call about an armed robbery near the campus on Monday and a witness description of the suspect's car was similar to the car Hassan and Roberson were driving, according to Vice President of University Relations Joe Cardona. Because police believed there was a handgun in the vehicle Hassan and Roberson were in, the officers trained their weapons at them and ordered the students to get out of the car.

we could file this under 'entitled me, how dare they' but I wonder if we need a 'required' freshman course, that explains what law enforcement is, and why they would pull people over, or why they might react to certain situations that may not be fully known to the person being pulled over or detained but are completely necessary (example here: armed robbery gun in car).

What say Freepers?

I would hate to be in that situation, but the police followed their procedures and the two students were released. The first student, Hassan, is probably going to say he was profiled.

Our current state of in-civility and criminality in this country has driven our law enforcement to this point. Society has to determine if we want it to continue (militarization of LEO) or go back to the Keystone Cops era.

I was 18, sitting in my car with two friends. Waiting for a third. We were going clay bird shooting. A couple of shotguns sticking up in the back seat, I was wasting time looking at the young women going into the bank down the road with my friends binoculars. Across the street from it was the police station.

3 unmarked cars scream in cops run out guns drawn. We are all put up against the car and cuffed with Guns pointed at us.

“WE’RE GOING SKEET SHOOTING …LOOK IN THE TRUNK!!” I scream.

As the trunk pops open the 4th member of our party exits the apartment building with a side by side 12 broke open in the crook of his arm “what’s going on” he says. As the trunk opens revealing the skeet machine two boxes of skeet and 5-6 boxes of #7.5 loads.

“Oh We saw you glassing the bank and the guns and well…”.

Th cops left. We went skeet shooting.

Didn’t make the papers. Nobody sued. Life goes on. My friends had a good laugh at my expense for glassing the skirts. Which would be another ‘heinous crime ‘ today.

In 1969, I was pulled over forcefully - as in my car and I were run off the road and onto the curb by an LAPD officer and a shotgun was pulled on me as soon as I had stopped.

I was still recovering from gunshot wounds from Vietnam, so I had difficulty getting out of the car when the officer demanded it - I had a full-length steel leg brace and crutches and he stuck the muzzle of that riot gun in my face, yelling.

I was shaking all over and had no idea what the hell was going on. He didn't shoot (obviously) and when he settled down, wrote me up for an "unsafe lane change" after he told me that I looked like an armed robbery suspect.

I read in the papers the next day that the LAPD shot and killed another guy who they thought was the armed robbery suspect but he turned out to be the wrong guy and a father going home to his children.

Great fun.

"It’s called a felony stop. Everybody went home."

Which makes it perfectly fine, right?

They didn't kill anybody. This time.

Love how anything at all done by law enforcement - even threatening death to innocent citizens - is fine, as long as they are wearing a badge.

I was in the process of moving from Virginia to Illinois. Car had va plates. Walked out of the hotel and was surrounded by FBI and local police with guns drawn! Stopped and did what they said. Turns out a murderer drove the same make and model car with va plates. I followed orders and didn’t get shot...imagine that!

I think maybe you should become a LEO and show everybody how it should be done.

When I was 18, me and a friend had been asked to repair a broken window at our church. We got there and he realized he forgot the key. So, as two wise young adults, we figured the window was already broken, let’s just remove it and crawl in. It was about 8-9 feet off the ground and the ladder was inside. So we backed my mom’s big monster Oldsmobile station wagon up to the window. Just as he got in the window, it seemed the entire police department arrived from four directions. Lights and sirens.

There were at least six patrol cars.

It was pretty easily explained, especially when we showed them the glass and glazing putty inside the church.

In highschool I had one that was a step up from what you got. This was in the 70’s. We were driving through town at about midnight in my friends Bug. The cops tailed us for a few blocks and the red lights went on. They got 4 of us out of the car and lined us up at the back with the bright squad car lights on us. They then got a very distraught girl out of the back of the squad car and brought her forward. They asked, “Are these the guys?”. She said, “No.”

The cops said we could go. As I got back into the car, I was thinking, “This girl could have ruined my life, if she made a mistake.”

Even so, I guess I’m glad I never aspired to the Supreme Court.

Police risk their lives every day, one was killed yesterday & several wounded in SC. Many are blown away at traffic stops or by people walking up to them sitting in a stopped car. When they stop a car that resembles a vehicle described in a BOLO they need to have control of the situation. Even in a traffic stop if someone moves quickly the LEO need to move quickly to be sure they protect themselves and the public.

Anyone who doesn’t understand that it is life and death for the police, and is living in a world where they are offended by a gun being drawn is just out of touch.

100-200 police a year are killed in the line of duty (128 -2017). Each time they stop someone it could be their turn. If during a traffic stop the people stopped are polite, no sudden moves, obey all directions, they can be quickly cleared & on their way. If not they can expect the police to put them in cuffs or on the ground while steps are taken to be sure they aren’t a threat.

The same thing happened to my roommate years ago. His car fit the description of a bank robbers and Five squads descended on him at once.
He told me later that all the cops were cool except one really young officer who was shaking violently while aiming his gun at him.

I guess I’m always amazed when a fool decides he’s less safe when he is being checked out without the ability to use a gun on an approaching law enforcement person who will show restraint, than when he is being accosted by a felon that won’t. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve read about a cop being capped when he approached a car they pulled for something to include a minor traffic violation. And this pull was to check for a felony based upon a description of the car. Sometimes safety can be an inconvenience as it is unsafe in its nature.

God forbid we should have an intelligent and truthful discussion on the subject.

Most of those are traffic accidents or heart attacks. In 2017 of about 130 officers kill in the line of duty, 46 were shootings. I keep a list of stories where police kill innocent civilian, and there are quire a few, about one every other week. A citizen who is acting lawfully should not be killed by police.

I have a lot of respect for police, and I think that the BLM nonsense has resulted in the murder of over a dozen police officers, and those promoting BLM should be held to account. However, I am tired of the excuse I hear when police blow innocent citizens away it is because the "it is a dangerous job."

Here is a list of the top 10 most dangerous jobs:

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/04/the-10-most-dangerous-jobs-for-men.html

You'll notice police officer isn't on the list.

You know who is on the list... truck drivers, including delivery drivers. So, when that fellow from Dominos shows up at your door with a pizza, you should shake his hand warmly and thank him for his service.

Delivering in Toronto, stopped at a red light waiting to make a turn.
The light changed, I made my turn and suddenly flashing lights behind me.
Pulled over, looked out rearview mirrors and saw cops approaching with guns drawn.
My first thought was ‘Wow, they take traffic offences seriously here in Toronto’.
Turned out I supposedly fit the description of a bank robber.
They took me to the bank and the folks there said, ‘Nah, that’s not the guy’.
Made for an interesting change of pace day.

Actually it was a Custom Cruiser, just like this one.

https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2011/06/27/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1973-oldsmobile-custom-cruiser/

It was a beast. 454 engine, built like a fire truck.

I once burned rubber across and entire parking lot. 1/4 tank of gas just to get to school.

And a really good, albeit ineffective burglary vehicle.
