An interesting perspective from Chicago radio
WIND Chicago, The Morning Answer | Myself

Posted on 09/13/2018 4:11:27 AM PDT by proud American in Canada

Hi,

I grew up in Chicago and thanks to the internet, I listen to Dan Proft and Amy Jacobson every morning, Chicago's Morning Answer.

Dan went to the same school I did, I think, Northwesern.

Anyway, he just made a great comment: read some books. History, economics, etc. In other words, don't ever stop educating yourself.

The brain is like the body...use it or lose it. 😁

Just thought his comment was worth menntioning.

Just wanted to pass this along. Let's all go to a library or bookstore today! :)

Gosh I miss Chicago.

I hear them on the terrestrial radio every day. Great show. Thanks to Big John Howell for moving to WLS and opening up the spot for Proft.

What he said is pretty much common sense, but I know adults who stopped reading after they got out of school. But one of the better-educated people I’ve known was a late friend who never made it to college. He drove a bread truck for Gonnella. He had broad interests and read widely — history, pre-history, theology, philosophy, literature. He joined the Russian Orthodox Church and taught himself Old Church Slavonic and Russian. He liked to do translations of old Russian books into English. We used to sit up late, drink coffee, smoke, and have the best conversations.

Much of what I have learned that is really meaningful to me has come from independent reading. When I was a kid, I used to page through the encyclopedia to find topics to read about. I loved getting “The World Almanac” every year.

My current reading: for vocational and avocational reasons, H.L. Mencken’s “The American Language.” I teach ESL to adults, and the more I know about the language, the better. I also read a lot in 19th century American history. I always learn something new, often a fact that is important or at least interesting, but which has been obscured or forgotten by the passage of time. Current reading: “The Indian War of 1864,” written by a veteran of that war. I got it for either free or for 99 cents on Kindle, a great source for that kind of memoir, out-of-print local histories, etc.

I still have the photo of Amy in a bikini when she stopped over to have a swim in my pool. Hawt stuff!

Interesting! I’ll have to read Mencken. And it’s true, you don’t have to incur thousands of dollars in student loans to be informed and educated. Your friend sounds like an interesting person. :)

Sorry, all, I fell asleep after posting this:) Haven’t been sleeping well. :)

I used to live at 94th and Commercial. :)

Wow, I will have to check out Kindle. Sounds quite interesting.

The only thing is, if I go to the beach, I have to bring a paperback...don’t want my tablet stolen. Though I suppose I could print out a few pages. ?

I’m familiar with that neighborhood. My wife’s family attended St. Archangel Michael Church there. Most of the Serbs have moved out of the neighborhood, and they moved the church to Lansing about 20 years ago. They sold the church at 9801 S. Commercial to an Ethiopian Orthodox congregation.

We still get over to that area once in a while, mostly on the way to Calumet Fisheries.

My son is up on the technological gadgets. He got a Kindle Fire and then I had to have one too. It’s great. I have probably a couple hundred titles on that one device. They have lots of old books that would be hard, if not impossible, to find elsewhere. Its suggestions help make me aware of books I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. I have found some good new authors and books, too. I think there is an app that allows people to use it on a different platforms. It might allow printing, but I have never used that.

I still like real books. They don’t have batteries that go dead, and I find them easier to read outside. But Kindle is a great way to have lots of books for cheap and without having to install more bookcases!
