Coronal hole faces Earth

After last month's impressive G3 geomagnetic storm caused by a coronal mass ejection, it is time to welcome back a familiar solar feature on our nearest star today. We have a small coronal hole facing our planet today.

The high speed solar wind stream flowing from this coronal hole will likely take about three days to arrive at Earth which means the solar wind stream should impact Earth somewhere this Friday, 7 September. Active geomagnetic conditions are likely which is great news for northern hemisphere high latitude sky watchers who finally enjoy proper dark nights again.

Is a coronal hole the same thing as a sun spot?

I thought we have had a spotless sun for a record period recently.

That reminds me of the old commercial “open wide for Chunky”.

I think a coronal hole is different from a sun spot.

When I first glanced at the title I thought it said “Corn hole faces earth”.

Why have I watched a number of old Chunky commercials recently?

Because Rod Rosenstein reminded me of someone, and I wanted to see if anyone else noted the resemblance. They had.

A corona hole is a thin spot in the atmosphere of the sun that allows higher speed solar wind to escape the sun.

Sun spots are smaller holes of magnetic instability that can create solar flares (cracks in the surface of the sun that allows very high energy to escape. X-rays and gamma radiation.) and coronal mass ejections from the surface out into space.

Well, you made me look..... Apparently

"Coronal holes are areas where the Sun's corona is colder, hence darker, and has lower-density plasma than average because there is lower energy and gas levels. Coronal holes are part of the Sun's corona and are constantly changing and reshaping because the corona is not uniform.[1] The Sun contains magnetic fields that arch away from areas in the corona that are very thin due to the lower levels of energy and gas,[1] which cause coronal holes to appear when they do not fall back. Thus, solar particles escape at a rate great enough to create a lower density and lower temperature in that area.[2]"

Coronal Hole Magnetic Field Lines-image shows what happens when the field lines do not fall back, and instead allow solar wind to escape
