"Alone I'm nothing," said Robert Plant. But as Led Zeppelin's front man, he was the guy in the spotlight - and, according to a Rolling Stone's readers poll, the best lead singer of all time. Of course we all have our favorites. Here for Plant's 70th birthday, are 50 of the most compelling frontmen of the rock and roll era.

I’m 64 and bought one Led Zeppelin album. It was the one with Stairway To Heaven on it. I did like some of the songs on that album but was never a big fan of the group specifically. That said, there is no doubt in my mind that I think he’s the best singer lead man for any rock group in history.
No Buddy Holly! No Chuck Berry!! No Elvis!! No Jerry Lee Lewis!!
Not clicking thru 50 pages of MSN click bait....so called slide show.
Try playing bass with the left hand, keyboards with the right, while tapping foot pedals and singing at the same time. Never do his bass lines follow the easy route while singing.
His parents were Holocaust survivors.
Anyone can stand at a mike stand and just sing.
So many choices. In a list of 50, some will be left out.
I was looking for David Bowie or Steve Marriott or Paul Weller.
Lifelong David Gilmour fan agreeing wholeheartedly!
Mick Jagger, Alvin Lee... ...
whether he is on the list or not ( i don’t have the time to click! Lazy) David Lee Roth wins for me.
Youre correct. Lee is a master.
L
Yes, I agree. Rush was one of the best bands of all time.
I didn’t see the list but I would think Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger and Ian Gillian are on it.
How about frontwomen...Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue would get my vote.
Won’t do the click bait but David lee Roth, Mick, Fred Scheinder, did they mention Michael Jackson? or bon scott?
“No Buddy Holly! No Chuck Berry!! No Elvis!! No Jerry Lee Lewis!!”
What’s up with that?
Good gosh I forgot about one of the greats in my previous posts...Roger Daltry!!
Chuck Berry was hardly a frontman for a band. He was a solo performer.
Story: back in the 1970s Berry came into PHX to play a concert. He didn’t have his own band-—he hired one in town, friends of mine. They were a nine-piece horn band.
When he arrived at the rehearsal, the day of the event, he said, “I don’t need horns” and fired the horn players. He said, “I don’t use keyboards,” and fired the keyboard player. He said to the guitarist, “I don’t need another guitar.” He played the gig with just the bass player & drummer.
I also heard he demanded his $$ in cash, in a bag, at the end of the event.
Wrote "Nights in White Satin" at age 19 and sent the band to number one ranking for a decade off their first album, "Days of Future Passed".
Enduring lead singer. He and the Moodies are still at it after 52 years.
I’m not sure “click bait” applies here. Sure there are ads surrounding each page but you don’t have to look at them, and there are no pop-ups.
Yes bravo selection - Steve Marriott for Small Faces and Humble Pie.
Too many of them-cheapens it. Steve miller? Boring rock.
