I’m 64 and bought one Led Zeppelin album. It was the one with Stairway To Heaven on it. I did like some of the songs on that album but was never a big fan of the group specifically. That said, there is no doubt in my mind that I think he’s the best singer lead man for any rock group in history.
No Buddy Holly! No Chuck Berry!! No Elvis!! No Jerry Lee Lewis!!
Try playing bass with the left hand, keyboards with the right, while tapping foot pedals and singing at the same time. Never do his bass lines follow the easy route while singing.
His parents were Holocaust survivors.
Anyone can stand at a mike stand and just sing.
So many choices. In a list of 50, some will be left out.
I was looking for David Bowie or Steve Marriott or Paul Weller.
Mick Jagger, Alvin Lee... ...
whether he is on the list or not ( i don’t have the time to click! Lazy) David Lee Roth wins for me.
I didn’t see the list but I would think Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger and Ian Gillian are on it.
How about frontwomen...Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue would get my vote.
Wrote "Nights in White Satin" at age 19 and sent the band to number one ranking for a decade off their first album, "Days of Future Passed".
Enduring lead singer. He and the Moodies are still at it after 52 years.
Peter Gabriel
Article is appreciated, but Top 50 is too many to make sense. The author basically just picked a bunch of the most famous rockers.
Also, there’s a difference between being a great frontman and a great artist. I lived through the 60s and 70s era of rock. Bob Marley and Greg Allman were great talents, but they were never really mentioned in the context of being great frontmen the way Jagger or Rod Stewart were.
Amazing how Robert Plant extended a look he borrowed from Roger Daltrey way past its shelf life.
That list was better than I expected, coming from an MSN link.
I’d sure expect to see Ronnie Van Zant at or hear the top of such a list.
Steve Perry, Sammy Hagar, DLR, Ozzy, Bruce Dickinson, Jagger, ...to name a few.

No Eric Clapton, Peter Cetera, John Mayall, David Clayton-Thomas?
No Paul Rodgers! Seriously. Why is this guy always short changed?
He fronted 3 bands that if I am not mistaken ALL had platinum records...
Yet constantly sold short.
I grew up in the 80s. The single best thing that ever happened was classic rock radio. It introduced those of us who were babies when Led Zepplin were making their music.
The same with the Eagles, and so many other great bands.
Mylon Lefevre (Mylon and Broken Heart), Greg X. Volz (Petra), John Schlitt (Petra), and Michael Drive (Barren Cross).
Vote for David Lee Roth as well. He was exactly what a frontman should be.
