Last year, I wrote a story about Stefan Bellof's 6:11.13 Nürburgring lap time set back in 1983 in a Porsche 956. I said it was a record that would remain unchallenged unless Porsche took its 919 LMP1 car to the 'Ring. That's exactly what it's done. Running a 5:19.55 around the famous Nordschleife, the Porsche 919 Evo driven by Timo Bernhard just obliterated the all-time record.
That's 51.58 seconds faster than Bellof's time, which is almost hard to believe. Onboard footage from Bernhard's lap, which you can see below, doesn't even look like real-life, but it is.
Unlike Bellof's 1983 record, which was set during qualifying for the Nürburgring 1000km, this record saw Porsche rent out the track just for itself with the company using a car not homologated for any race series. The 919 Evo is the same car that beat Lewis Hamilton's 2017 pole at Spa Francorchamps earlier this year. It's basically built to set lap records like this. To send off its three-time Le Mans-winning 919 after it was retired from sports-car racing, Porsche threw out the LMP1 rulebook and made a high-downforce, high-horsepower monster.

Wow, that is an incredible time. Bellof’s record stood for 35 years. Tragically, Bellof was killed in a racing accident just after setting the Neubugring record. I think his accident was in a Porsche 956 at Spa, Belgium.
Dang, that’s impressive.

Was the car set up just for that one run or could it have kept doing it?
A blonde, wanting to earn some extra money, decided to hire herself out as a “handy-woman” and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighbourhood.
She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.
“Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch,” he said, how much will you charge me?”
The blonde quickly responded, “How about $50?”
The man agreed and told her that the paint and everything she would need was in the garage.
The man’s wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband,” Does she realize that our porch goes all the way around the house?”
He responded, “That’s a bit cynical, isn’t it?”
The wife replied, “You’re right. I guess I’m starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes we’ve been getting lately.”
A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
You’re finished already?” the husband asked.
“Yes,” the blonde replied, “and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats.”
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her.
“And by the way,” the blonde added, “it’s not a Porch, it’s a Lexus”
McLaren did it in 6:43.22 with a street legal P1 LM which has always impressed the hell out of me.

That’s very impressive for an available $$$ to the public car, versus this factory car, but a 5:19, holy fook, that’s flying.
The high six minute range is about it for most super cars and most race cars.
I read that the two energy recovery devices were the same as the Le Mans configuration, but they ignored the regulation that requires a limit of 2L/lap of fuel. I bet they could do a 3 hour race, not sure about 24 hour.

The fact they get 710hp out of a V4 engine is incredible too. Of course, it’s probably shot at the end of the race.
Oh, the engine would have to be rebuilt every race. The question is how many hours could it go like that?
