It is not just bird shot. It is everything. Deer are roughly human sized. It is common for them to be shot through the heart with a high powered rifle round, and still run 50-100 yards. I have seen it myself. When I dressed out one little buck, the heart was in tatters, just pieces of it. There is enough oxygen in the blood to allow active life for several seconds. Plenty of time to draw a gun and fire back. The are medal of honor stories of people taking several 7.62x39 rounds in the torso and actively fighting for several minutes.
That video is worth watching.
Looking at the video closely, it appears to me she was 10 feet from the shooter when he fires.

That sounds like what I saw. On a double barrel, you’d need a press.
Don't need a different gun. Needs more practice with what you've got, and maybe a little added thought, MAYBE better ammo.
Start about 2:25, *I don;t need a thousand-dollar shotgun...*
I can hit with a handgun spot on. Just like the idea of still be able to hit the target if (s)he tries to dodge upon seeing weapon. But, you’re right. I don’t know much about guns.
I like shotguns for home defense. Sawed-off shotguns are easier for smaller people to wield in tight spaces.
I used to have to work with a Remington 870 for LE boardings on boats. Very tight spaces. Not the easiest gun to work with.
You can argue about kick and all of that, but .410 shells do the job too. You can even use beanbag rounds if you don’t want to kill anybody.
Wifey got one as her *carry gun* for bear insurance when delivering charter passengers [fishermen/hunters/firefighters] in her helicopter. They've had about 3 fatal bear incidents in our area over the last year or so, my 18-inch barreled Mossberg is a bit largish for her carry space, and her usual folding stock AK can go under her seat as well.
She's put around 400 rounds through it looking for the right load, NOT the same as what I use in the 18-inch tube gun, interestingly enough. Slugs are indeed part of the answer for bears, but only part of it and the definitive load has yet to be determined.
She's got a green laser mounted up top, too. They're not real effective below freezing, but until then, it'll do for her.
My 12 Gauge #1, 2-3/4" buckshot load has 20, of about .30 each. Recoil is heavy, but not brutal, and pretty close to that of the slug load I use; flash is also a consideration. But it is not my first choice for nighttime bear encounters.
