Chang Ming Chuang, 66, was tracking the animal at a wildlife resort on Lake Naivasha, 90km (56 miles) north-west of the capital, Nairobi.
A second Chinese tourist was injured in the attack. Six people have been killed by hippos in the area this year. High water levels have seen hippos - the world's deadliest large land mammal - stray on to resorts for pasture.
Witnesses said the two tourists had come too close to the animal near the Sopa hotel.

Keep your distance, tourists. It should be fairly obvious if there are any Hippos in the area. The babies are as big as Army Jeeps.

Hippos kill a *lot* of people in Africa. Thousands per year.
They kill more people in Africa than lions, elephants or cape buffalo.
Crocodiles kill hundreds per year.
But, disease carried by mosquitoes kills hundreds of thousands per year.

To be fair, you have way better odds of getting bit by a Pig than a Hippo...
Especially if you tend to swim in, Pig infested waters / badaa-boom
Yep hippo had a taste for Chinese.
I blame Disney for giving us a completely unrealistic impression of wild animals.
