Consider getting advice from a professional trainer and/or a vet.

I'm always open to professional advice, but I have dog training experience as I trained bird dogs for years. And, I have trained some smart bird dogs, but this pit bull is smarter. What makes him dangerous is that he's like a light switch, and he gives no warning. No growl, no posture. He just twists off and bites. And, even though I knew of the nature of the breed, I thought if I applied my training experience, I could make him a safe dog to be around. In the end, what I ended up with was a highly-trained really smart pit bull who still twists off without warning. I barrier-trained him really well, and he still heals on my command. That is, when he isn't in the middle of his Tasmanian devil imitation. It's in their DNA. They are either on or off when it comes to aggression. They know no middle ground.

I don’t think it is a given that he will become crankier with age. As you say he has improved, he may continue that trend as he gets older.

I hoped for that, but he is starting to show a bit of crankiness. However, he isn't taking it to extremes yet.

You say your family loves the dog. Most vets have a special private ‘living room’ where the family can gather and say goodbye and the dog can pass peacefully.

Thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind.

PLEASE take the dog to the vet for a FULL workup.

It is sick.
