I was thinking about the Pope’s stance on capital punishment. Previously for; now against.

Theory: Previously it might have been a good tool to permanently silence enemies. Now maybe he doesn’t want to risk a death sentence for himself or other cabal members.

No theory: How does ex-Pope Benedict fit into the story? White hat? Black hat? No hat?
