In an article for the August issue of National Geographic titled Starving-Polar-Bear Photographer Recalls What Went Wrong, Cristina Mittermeier talks about the intended message of the image versus the message that was received.
We had lost control of the narrative, she said.
Photographer Paul Nicklen and I are on a mission to capture images that communicate the urgency of climate change. Documenting its effects on wildlife hasnt been easy, she wrote in the article.
With this image, we thought we had found a way to help people imagine what the future of climate change might look like. We were, perhaps, naive. The picture went viral and people took it literally.
The image she is referencing shows an emaciated polar bear with hardly any fur covering its bony frame. In a video that was also taken of the bear, it can be seen slowly moving through the terrain, rummaging through an empty can.
Mittermeier goes on to say that it was the language put out by the publication that led to the message being misconstrued.
The first line of the National Geographic video said, This is what climate change looks like with climate change then highlighted in the brands distinctive yellow.
She estimated that 2.5 billion people saw the footage: It became the most viewed video on National Geographics website ever, she said.
From there, social media and news outlets erupted over the message that was being portrayed.

What? They lied? /s
Fake pictures push the narrative.
They didn’t care that it was fake, because it pushed the narrative.
Just as the recent picture of the crying little girl, allegedly separated from parents at the border, was fake. That little girl had not been separated. Didn’t matter to the liberal idiots who run Time magazine. The pushing of the narrative is more important than reporting the news, to the idiots in charge of our news and entertainment media.
Fake shmake, it’s all for the cause!
One fake picture is worth a thousand lies.
“That little girl had not been separated. Didnt matter to the liberal idiots who run Time magazine. “
Didn’t matter to my idiot democrat neighbors either...swallowed it whole.
Critters get old, get feeble and eventually die, if something else doesn’t kill them first. Just like us.
OMG!
I wanted to post my usual snark to the article premise but, your gif captured the idiocy.
Anyway, the “Globull “ bear is sick and old.
Nature is taking its way, as usual.
I grew up reading NG. I always had a stack of them under my bed. I had a great deal of respect for the scientists and editors extremely high professional standards. I wouldn’t wipe my ass with the rag now. (Maybe they started to notice a late decline in respect coming their way?)
She estimated that 2.5 billion people saw the footage.
2.5 billion people did not see your article or video.
It was “viewed” 2.5 billion times and even that number seems inconceivable.

Yes
Climate change is a matter of science and fact and not narrative. Theres is strong consensus in science about climate change and global watming. It is happening. We better get it right. Our lives and that of future generations is at stake.
LOL!
It is a matter of science and fact that only arrives at its conclusion by some number of people agreeing to the premise, therefore, forming a consensus?
Well....uhmmmmm.....
And the witty reparte’ of responses :
there was a very strong consensus the earth was flat and deniers were persecuted. not unlike anyone who questions the current mantra. everyone wants to fund studies for ‘Man caused” global warming, while virtually no one will fund studies to the contrary. Group think or nothing.
That was a very polite counter
Since when does science depend on a vote. Columbus and Galileo would have been voted wrong. Dinosaurs are lizards, no wait!. They are birds. Pluto is a planet. No wait, its a rock. There is no water on Mars. No wait, there is water on Mars. A scientific consensus is meaningless and not science. The scientific method does not involve a vote.
No, it takes time to think of specious ways to tie a non-existent event to non-existent consequences.
Yeah, it’s clear her hair is not naturally blond.
Ahh memories.. Forgot all about that gif.. An oldie but goodie!
Yep.. The Left and their Dan Rather “false but accurate” style reporting.
Typical low life LIB liars. How pathetic.
What, exactly does this oft-used euphemism really mean? The narrative was very clearly expressed as "This is what global warming looks like" when it was nothing of the sort. The narrative was a lie.
"Perhaps we made a mistake in not telling the full story..."
Well, yes, but that would entail a little truth in labeling - "This is what global warming could look like if it were happening and everybody knows it's happening" is a considerably weaker narrative, and that's what they've actually fallen back on. They haven't changed a thing with regard to the truth.
