Plus, Mars does have something of an atmosphere. Thin but it’s there. That could have had an effect on the topology.

“Worlds in Collision” (1950, Immanuel Velikovsky) theorizes how this MAY have happened and is an interesting read.
I’ve read that book. :)
And it was a great read! I have another one that has a bit longer title: The biblical flood and the Ice Epoch. I’ve talked with the author of that one. He’s the one that turned me on to Velikovsky’s book. His is from a biblical perspective, but surprisingly similar, probably because of his familiarity with Velikovsky’s work.
