It appears that disease took both indians and their dogs after european—and african contact.
Great books on this subect are 1491 and 1493.

My dog is Native American...born right here in my backyard. I’m a witness. He’s a Dreamer too...not well trained.

Interesting. The Europeans brought dogs with them, and obviously the native dog population, for one reason or another, was already on the downhill slide. Im not sure what the domesticated dog population in the northern Americas was like pre European, but Id imagine it was heavily wolf.
In the south, chihuahuas are actually a very ancient breed, but the originals dont look like those trembling little handbag dogs. The original Chihuahuas had sort of long hair and floppy ears and were about the size of a small spaniel.

Oh. OK. But this is what I read:
The oldest dog remains in the Americas date to about 9,000 years ago... These dogs persisted for thousands of years in the Americas, but almost completely vanished after European contact, the researchers found...
Nothing about the cancer until the next sentence. At least, that's how I read it.

I was an honoured guest and they gave me a treat. Boiled dog. Dog ain't bad, neither. Greasy, I'll admit, but you'd be surprised how delicate the flavour is, especially when you're starving.
