I'm in the mood to buy a .357 lever action rifle at the next gun show. Recommendations?

“There’s always 30 Carbine.”

I have the 30 cal carbine Ruger Blackhawk 7 1/2” barrel with scope mounted. I’ve killed a bunch of feral hogs with it. Fun to shoot.

It was in North Haven, CT.
Quality definitely suffered after Remington took over.
Moving also cost them most of their talent that knew how to make those great rifles.
I have several.

IIRC Sportsman’s Guide is tied in with Dick’s and their anti-gun debacle. Just sayin’

Sportsman’s Guide has AR-15s aplenty, AKs, all kinds of things (457 results in semi-auto rifles alone). Do you have any links to corroborate your claim?

Find an old Marlin or nothing at all.

“Marlin if you can find one in .357.”

Wonder how the ballistics of the Marlin 357 compares to the 30-30 Winchester? I believe the 30-30 drops about 6” in the first 100 yards.

Go for the 44 mag. Way better performance with little recoil, and sound blast is much lower than revolver

And if you go with a 44 mag rifle the Ruger 77/44 is outstanding.

I was doing exactly what you are doing a few years ago after I got a S&W model Pre-27. I researched a LOT and bought the Marlin. Henry is never but a cowboy gun needs to be loaded like a cowboy gun, though the side port not down the barrel. Winchester’s are nice too but I don’t like the top ejector. For whatever reason I can’t explain I have never been partial to the Rossi. It’s just me I am sure

I reload too and have worked up a single load for the pistol and rifle that works well. If you get full copper for the rifle it will knock down pigs just fine even though you will have to suffer through the “too light”, “your nuts” and other comments but let me assure you it works just fine.

The carbine is what i have because I stupidly passed up the chance to buy the 18” octagon barrel. If I found another one I would be hard pressed not to get it.

And you can do the Wild West guns loop lever which is nice.

I picked up a Rossi at an auction, smooth action. Watch out for the hot brass, top ejection!! Fun gun to go with my Colt Python, 38/357 guns.

A Henry! Yes! I’d sleep with mine if my wife would let me.

Great gun for anything from targets to plinking to varmint control and hunting. Good for deer out to 100 yards and hogs at closer range. I replaced the stock semi-buckhorn sights with a Skinner peep sight. Very accurate to 100 yards.

Energy levels are not too far off, I think about 75% of the .30-30.

Ballistics are acceptable for deer hunting to 150 yards, which handles most of woods hunting. They are much worse than the .30-30 after that.

Actual difference off line of sight depends on the distance the rifle is zeroed for.

If zeroed at 125 yards, a .357 165 grain load at 1800 fps out of a rifle will be about 1.7 inches high at 75 yards and 2.25 inches low at 150 yards.

I liked a mod 94 in .44 mag that my dad owned.
I liked to shoot 180 grain bullets because less drop.

Save your qt oil containers and fill em with water.
That’s my personal favorite target.
