Syrian Government Appeals for Refugees to Return, Help Rebuild Country

BEIRUT (AP) — The Syrian government on Tuesday called on refugees to return, saying it has successfully cleared large areas of “terrorists.” The rare appeal reflects the government’s growing confidence after more than seven years of war. While officials usually appeal to Syrians abroad to return during television appearances and interviews, this is the first formal appeal broadcast on official media.

Syrian government forces, with crucial support from Russia and Iran, recently retook large areas near the capital, Damascus, and are waging a new offensive in the south that U.N. officials say has displaced more than 270,000 people.

The U.N. Security Council scheduled closed consultations for Thursday on the offensive and rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the southwest at the request of Sweden and Kuwait.

The government currently controls over 61 percent of Syria, compared to early 2017, when it held just 17 percent, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which closely monitors the conflict.

The government refers to all rebels as “terrorists.”

I doubt their government is worse than ISIS.

I thought it was Assad that ran them out. You mean he’l protect them? I’m waiting for Trump’s safe zone.

The Russian gov does not even take of its own vets...most of the Russians fighting in Syria are not state soldiers, but “private” mercenaries that the Kremlin denies even exist. Mercenary combat is technically banned by Russian law.

But...maybe that’s changing.

Since 70% of Syrians stayed or relocated to Syrian government controlled areas, the non-Jihadist elements that fled abroad to avoid being caught in cross-fire are now being asked to come home. Many have and many will.

“I’m waiting for Trump’s safe zone.”

The problem is they predate on each other. There is no way to create a “safe zone.” If they were being attacked by air or even by uniformed land forces, maybe. But their attacker will be the more holy than thou neighbor who doesn’t think the guy next door is sufficiently Muslim.

Putin/Trump hope to make deal over this matter at summit next weekend.

Iran has to leave the premises first. But Assad sees Iran as part of his lifeline.

“Who is going to protect them from their Government ? Russians ?”

If they took up arms against their government, I guess they’re out of luck.

“I thought it was Assad that ran them out.”

Partly, but also millions of Christians were driven out when Assad couldn’t hold on to their cities. Those people both want to come back and will be welcomed back. Most are in Lebanon...real refugees, in other words.

Neocons will weep. I hope John McCain is still alive enough to be aware of this.

If they’re going back, it is to reintegrate with their government and live in their former villagrs now that radical islamists have been cleaned out

Reuters is not a credible source. It’s owned - lock, stock and barrel - by the British fascist NWO. Reuters’ attack and propaganda toward the Israeli state is infamous.

What a novel idea—but that's really what refugees are supposed to do.

If they refuse to go back because they fear the duly UN recognized government then they must be ISIS supporters so jail them.

Exactly correct. The Christian community in Lebanon has been doing a lot to help these refugees, who are in great need. It would be a good thing if they can return safely home. Odd how none of the wealthy countries funding Syrian rebels will contribute for these refugees.
