Roaming stork lands Polish charity with huge phone bill

A Polish charity has been hit with a massive phone bill after a GPS tracker it had put on a stork was stolen.

In April 2017, Polish environmental group EkoLogiczna placed a GPS tracker on the back of Kajtek, a white stork, to collect data about the bird’s winter migration route as well as its feeding habits.

In the year that followed, Kajtek travelled some 6,000 kilometres but was last recorded on 26 April in the Blue Nile Valley in eastern Sudan.

In a Facebook post, the group explains that “for unknown reasons” Kajtek stayed in the area for over two months, "travelling 25 kms in different directions during the day".

Last month, EkoLogiczna was surprised with a phone bill linked to the SIM card installed in the Kajtek’s GPS tracker for a total amount of 10,000 PLN (€2,278).

“Someone quite simply removed the card from the tracker, put it in a phone and used it for 20 hours of communication,” the group said in the Facebook post.

According to the EuroNatur Foundation, Poland is a major centre of distribution for the white stork, accounting for 40% of the bird's world population.

It's a good thing some Nigerians did not get a hold of it. I'm sure they would have figured a way to make a million off this sudden windfall.

One must assume the stork is dead.

Yes, they probably wouldn’t ask for too much good faith money. 😁😆

And slowly stewed in a pot. Stork is good eating. With that long neck, it makes a heck of a soup. Tastes like chicken.

I know these whooping cranes we get in S Texas hang with the sand hill cranes in oats patches that have been planted during the winter. BOTH are way good.

Incredibly the headline blames the stork as if it was placing long-distance phone calls.

The Nigerians that I have met that have come here, mostly all legally, are very smart industrious people. Hard working, family oriented, religious, with a priority for getting their kid’s educated. One of the biggest obstacles they face is keeping their kids away from the American black hip-hop culture.

I worked with 5 Africans in California. I noticed the same thing. These were all well educated, hard working people. One female, from East Africa, was a Captain in the Air Force Reserve, at Travis AFB, CA.

The ones I have met that are not educated work very hard and their priority is getting their kid’s educated. Nigerians are a very small percentage of the US population but they make up and a good percentage of the black folks at the Ivy league universities. Let’s just hope the Ivy league garbage does not brain wash them.
