After the agonising nature of their last-16 defeat by Belgium, Japan's World Cup squad and their thousands of fans would have been forgiven for leaving the Rostov Arena as swiftly as possible.

A number of Japan players were in tears after being knocked out of the tournament when a late, late goal from Nacer Chadli sealed a 3-2 comeback victory for Belgium.

But, as revealed by FIFA general coordinator Priscilla Janssens on Twitter, Japan's squad went to extra lengths to thank their hosts in Russia as they bowed out.

It is said, in Japan, you could leave your wallet on a restaurant table and come back 4 hours later and it would still be there untouched.

Not a chance here, even 4 minutes would be too long.

To those that say “all cultures are equal”, I present - Exhibit A: Japan.

Not in Tokyo but in the Southern part of Japan for sure.

They say Tokyo has more crime form immigrants. Southern Japan none.

Had a buddy from Brooklyn leave an expensive Nikon camera on a train in Japan back in the early 80’s while stationed there in the Marines. We got on the train in Hiroshima and got off in Iwakuni and he wrote it off. A buddy who had been there several years and was fluent said call the station in Shimono seki which was the end of the line and several hours from when we got off and it was still there.

I think the U.S. is raising a generation of pigs. Myself and a number of other seniors play pick-up softball games several times a week at a local park. Yesterday was no different, there was trash all over, plastic water bottles left in the dugout and around the stands with garbage cans only feet away. This was all left by the players who played on the field the night before..........

What ever trash is there when we arrive, we usually pick up and dispose of it properly....

Maybe the single best half of soccer I’ve ever seen.

This is very Japanese.

Even their boxes are neat. Buy any simple item like a box of cookies and it will be carefully packaged. They take pride in the simplest of the things to make it look beautiful.

I left my gloves on a counter and turned around an less than a minute later a black woman grabbed them and stuffed them in her purse.

Then had the nerve to argue with me that they were hers for 10 minutes- until I just grabbed them out of her purse and threw it down the aisle...

I agree about the generation of pigs.

People are getting lazier all the time. I have my lazy times too but it isn’t a lifestyle.

All true. I marketed, exported, and helped our Japanese partners sell American products there for many years. Their consumers are obsessive about quality, not only in the products but in the packaging and presentation. Aesthetics are as important to them as function. It was frustrating when explaining this to my fellow Americans who were making the goods led to blank stares and shrugs.

I taught a class in a high school once and the kids brought in plates and food and junk and when the bell rang they got up and left all their garbage on the desks... I shut the door and said “your mom doesn’t work here, pick up all your stuff”

When I played Little League we had to stay behind and clean the dugout and the stands after the game.

Aesthetics are as important to them as function

I had experience that both in Japan and in South Korea. I hate to discard some of the packaging; the neatness and beauty of it all was part of the experience of being there.
