"The verdant splendor and fertility of many farmlands of the North Island of New Zealand are on volcanic soils of different ages. Volcanic loams have developed on older (4,000 and 40,000 years old) volcanic ash deposits of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions."

Free geothermal heating!
Even better news is when the US government, directly or indirectly, does NOT pay to rebuild. Very tired of seeing us spend money rebuilding when people build on beaches, flood areas, and on active volcanoes and then expect the US government to pay for their easily anticipated losses.
Excellent.
Here in California we worry about earthquakes and the new shoreline will be Barstow. Well Hawaii has the reverse problem. What used to be shoreline property is now Barstow.
Lava causes both high temps and high water, and it is our fault because of my lawn mover.
“The mile of new land in Kapoho Bay is now owned by the state”
Screw that. I’d be checking my deed to see if it says things like “bounded by the shore...”.
I wouldn’t recommend people living on a Volcano but that’s what we have here. I wouldn’t recommend anyone living in a Earthquake Zone across the Pacific. If that goes Southern California is finished and the Tsunami swallows Hawaii and so much more on the Pacific Rim.
I just bought a shack in Trenton, NJ because the property values HAVE to come up when the Californians move east.
This is getting dangerous. The whole island could tip over with the extra weight on one side.
And as Reno89519 points out, the impact goes even further. One sad effect, ironically, is that Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed indefinitely. It gets over 2 million visitors annually.
It’s worthless.
Totally, 100% worthless.
Same with the new acreage produced by Pu’u O’o in Kalapana. Useless. Takes a few hundred years to develop soil with plants growing. Plus the new stuff is right at sea level.
I read about this daily.
USGS volcano scientists really do not know when the eruption will end. It’s not possible to know.
How much new land did Obama create during his eight-year presidency?
MAG(M)A!
Damn! You beat me to it.
We own land about 30 minutes north of the lava in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Every time I get a phone call asking about the Volcano by family or friends I send them that pic. Lol
Were headed over there in September and everyone says......ooooohhhh dont go! Volcano! Lol
They started building on the Kalapana flow many years ago.
When the Mt St. Helens volcano blew, it took out most of the mountain. Looking at Mt Hood in Oregon, you can see where portions of the upper mountain have slid down to the side. I’m curious if part of Hawaii could also break off and slide into the ocean.
...and don't forget all the water vapor (the dominant greenhouse gas) it causes.
Theres already been court cases about this. Property lines remain the same. New land is the states. Now if a volcano put out diamonds and gold that buried your house it would be some compensation.
