I’ve told this story here before, but, here goes.

About ten years ago Mrs. L was bitten by the dog next door. No major damage, just two small holes in her index finger. It looked liked she’d been poked with a pencil. We called the paramedics, just in case, and the animal was quarantined.

In less than 36 hours Mrs. L was in the hospital with a fever of over 103. She spent the next 8 days in the hospital getting IV antibiotics and had surgery to clear out the last of the infection. It was touch and go for a couple of days.

The dog? A Jack Russel terrier.

All dogs can be dangerous.

What laws does your community have about free-roaming dogs? About fencing?
What are it’s leash laws?
Are the laws being rigorously and effectively enforced?

...and it needs to be asked what are you doing about the problem?

Your safety and community safety depends on individuals, such as you,
perhaps in conjunction with other similarly concerned individuals in the community
speaking out and demanding that effective laws be enacted and rigorously enforced.
Animal Control must respond promptly and effectively.
Too many times a lackadaisical AC response to a complaint result in a return visit to deal with a tragedy.

I’ve seen you post that story before.
I’m curious, what sort of an infection did she get? Did they give a name to it?

So dogs now have different “races”?

“Did they give a name to it?”

Yes. Cellulitis. It had gotten into one of the tendon sheaths in her finger and traveled over half way up her arm. It’s quite serious, very painful, and can be lethal if not treated in time.

I suppose in the same sense as there are different human races.

Although, I don't use that terminology in describing dogs or humans

For 'humans' there is only one species (race), Homo sapiens.
From that, I can distinguish separate breeds of humans.

Likewise in 'dogs', Canidae is the all-encompassing term and from that, we can distinguish separate breeds.

I suppose in our discussions we focus mostly on Canis familiaris, domesticated dogs.

Wow-a spark of sanity and common sense-having pet owners be responsible for their very own dogs no matter the breed...

What-are Mastiffs the new serial killer canine? If so, I’m in a rural danger zone-whether English, Neapolitan, Bullmastiff or other, Mastiffs are the most numerous dog-du-jour kept out here as a companion and guard for humans, property and livestock-there’s one behind every other gate, and in the front seat of 1/2 the 4x4’s in the parking lot of the feed store-am I now to assume my next door neighbor’s Bullmastiff is cocked and locked?...

Dog lovers fight back against city wide pit bull ban

EUREKA, MO - Dog lovers in Eureka are fighting back against a citywide pit bull ban.

Several advocates voiced their opposition Tuesday night asking the city to repeal the ban.

One Eureka dog owner did not want to be identified because she feared that her 10-year-old pit bull mix puppy may get taken away.

“There’s no way I would have moved here,” she said, “and I would move before I would give up my dog.”

Advocates said that the city’s current ban ordinance is too vague.

It bans ‘the American Pit Bull Terrier and any American Pit Bull Terrier crossbreed thereof.’

We want the leash laws enforced a little more,” said Mandy Ryan, President of the Missouri Bully Alliance.
We just want them to hold irresponsible owners accountable instead of deeming dogs aggressive just by the way they look.
Usually, breed-specific laws have a lot more restrictions listed and a lot more breeds listed and that’s such a vague ordinance that it’s not enforceable.”

Laurie Phillips who fosters animals including pit bulls and pit bull mixes said that she almost bought a house in Eureka
until she did her research and instead chose to live in Wildwood.

“There were a few houses that I liked but the minute I found out that there was a ban how could I possibly?” Phillips said.

“I just stopped looking. I wasn’t going to move to Eureka. How anybody could think that a pit bull ban or any kind of a dog ban is appropriate in our society today?”

Mayor Kevin Coffey said that there’s a reason why the ban went into place several years ago.

“The ban was put in after several complaints about aggressive pit bulls and attacks on other people’s animals,” Coffey explained, “our number one duty to our residents is safety.”

Two aldermen voted to repeal, but a motion was approved to meet with the alliance and work on the wording of current laws including a repeal.

Never thought I would own ( or like ) a Rottweiler until 2 slipped into my life.
Both had a rough beginning and a horrible first year ( bait dog and abandoned, chained to a tree).... Now.... they are the most loyal, loving and gentle dogs I’ve EVER owned.
