The first ever state-sanctioned bare-knuckle boxing match got a bloody ending Saturday night -- and a big response from a raucous crowd.

Arnold Adams, a 32-year-old MMA heavyweight, pounded ex-UFC fighter D.J. Linderman's face into a bloody mess in front of 2,000 rowdy fans at a hockey rink that usually hosts birthday parties and skating lessons in Wyoming's capital. Tens of thousands more tuned in for the pay-per-view event, which featured 10 bouts, including four heavyweight fights in a tournament format.

Gloves were introduced to protect the boxers hands not the opponent. With gloves a boxer can throw a punch with full force not worrying about breaking his knuckles.

Sorry, but I see no reason to turn humans into cockfighting animals.

one step away from Roman savagery.

It be better than the civilized effeminacy we are awash in. Look at all these soy-faced punks we have running around. We need more blood and more celebration of masculinity and the things of masculinity, including violence.

Besides, it's not like they're gladiators fighting there against their will. These people WANT to fight bare knuckled.

You’re conflating maleness with manhood. Violence in service of a Manhood which serves and advances the greater society is something other than violence for its own sake. What IS the definition of manhood in the 21st century at this point? Once men had authority aND responsibility. I have heard no late definition which refrences the former, only the latter. England is presently watching their nation circle the drain for want of ANY of the former...

Yes. I see a bunch of spineless young men with man-buns at work. It’s disgusting.

It’s illegal to put spurs on two roosters and throw them in a ring.
It’s illegal to pit two dogs against each other in a ring.
It’s illegal to put a bull in a ring against a guy with a cape.

But it’s perfectly legal to put two human beings in a ring and let them beat each other bloody.

Mmmmmmmkay.

The fighters are adults. They’re free to participate. And an audience is free to watch. But it’s a sad commentary on the state of our culture when we glorify such a barbaric spectacle.

“I expect gladiators with edged weapons to show up at some point.”......

Can you imagine seeing real “gun fights” like in the old west? No, not the same as we could easily witness in Chicago on a daily basis.

it’s a sad commentary on the state of our culture when we glorify such a barbaric spectacle.

You are a disgrace to your very cool FR name, and bereft of any cursory knowledge of American culture and history.

"Rough and tumble" or "gouging" was a form of fighting in rural portions of the United States, primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was often characterized by the objective of gouging out an opponent's eye but also included other brutally disfiguring techniques, including biting, and typically took place in order to settle disputes. Though gouging was common by the 1730s in southern colonies, the practice was waning by the 1840s, by which time the Bowie knife and revolver had made frontier disputes more lethal.[1][2] Though it was never an organized sport, participants would sometimes schedule their fights (as one could schedule a duel), and victors were treated as local heroes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gouging_(fighting_style)

And violence as spectacle is hardly an American invention.

I used to wonder the same thing for shows like “Combat!” and “Twelve O’Clock High” in the early-to-mid 60’s.

But now I think it was just a coincidence.
