Post-Memorial Day Blues At The B.O.: ‘Solo’ In Free Fall With $26M+ (tr)
Deadline ^ | June 1, 2018 | Anthony D'Alessandro

The post-Memorial Day weekend at the box office doesn’t have to be a downer. However, none of the majors wanted to take advantage of that opportunity and slot an event title here. Some will argue that it’s an oversaturated marketplace, however, product rules. Don’t forget that. A year ago, Wonder Woman opened in this space and soared to a $103.2M opening and became the biggest grossing title of last summer stateside with $412.5M. She followed on the heels of the lackluster start by Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which had a $78.4M four-day. This year, we’re left with holiday leftovers in Disney’s disappointment Solo: A Star Wars Story which according to estimates right now is grounded with a $7.5M second Friday, -78% which translates into a $26M second weekend, -69% for a running total of $145.5M. Ouch. End game stateside should be at $225M, and possibly about the same overseas for the Ron Howard-directed title. Yes, Solo is bound to lose money, however, whether it holds abroad this weekend will determine how much the hemorrhage is. [snip]

Fox originally had Deadpool 2 set to open on this weekend, but wisely moved it prior to Solo, and the pic is still eating into the Lucasfilm title’s business with a weekend three of $20M-$21M, -53% which isn’t too bad when you consider it’s coming off a holiday weekend where Sunday was bulked up. DP2 is looking at $6M today and a running domestic total north of $252M by Sunday. Some will argue that DP2‘s audience is so different from Solo‘s, but franchise films are franchise films pulling in both fanboys and a swell of the uninitiated. Clearly, a more general audience isn’t going out of their way for the latest Star Wars movie.

And that's how you set a franchise you spent $4 billion on fire.

We are avid movie-goers (no comment please, we always enjoyed the escape of movies). We have only seen one movie since Chappaquiddick. There is NOTHING INTERESTING. And rebooting good movies, and just changing the lead from a man to a woman, forget it! I already saw that movie and it was better with a male lead! Hollywood is dying on the vine and they don’t get it yet!

Just remember kids, everytime you plop down your hard earned money to see a Hollywood Movie, the chance is above 90% that they will use your money to DESTROY AMERICA and the American Way of Life, because HOLLYWOOD HATES AMERICA!!!

The Blsck guy in the movie reminds me of some 1970s porno film star. He’s got that Long Dong Silver air about him...

Reminds me of the womyn who neutered cartoons via Action For Childrens’ Television in the 70s.

Agreed. I usually check out to see what movies are coming out and very few of them look interesting.

Tbe concept of force has always been described as masculine - hence the modern corollary of a so-called rape culture.

I do not think that word means what they think it means.

An internet friend of mine saw the Han Solo movie last night and said that there was a total of seven people in the theater for the 7:45pm showing.

She also said the movie was okay but that the new Han Solo lacked the humor that Harrison Ford brought to the role.

She also said that “Rogue One” was an epic film compared to Solo and she wishes they’d do something more like that next time.

If the one on the left was not pregnant, she would not be half bad. Laz would hit em all.
Used to watch Star Wars, then I became an adult. Lol.

WOW, same here. Nothing since Chappaquiddick for us as well. I cant figure out who funds all those crappy movies. There are 9 movies playing at our local theater and we have no interest in seeing any of them.

It’s probably been 3 or 4 years since I’d paid to see a movie (maybe longer) but I broke down this spring and treated myself to a matinee showing of Death of Stalin. Funniest movie in 20 years.

Both Opie Cunningham and Disney take a bath on Solo. Viva American taste!
