He did so great with it. A lot of famous singers didnt write their songs. Hope was so funny, in character, or breaking it.
The “UFO House”, Palm Springs. It’s just so outrageous.
As best I understand it, you are quite correct. He was the product of his writers and not inherently funny or witty. My father had the great displeasure of driving him around on one of his WWII island visits and thought he was an arrogant, unfunny SOB. Kudos to his writers!

Thank you for this post.
I truly feel sorry for the American woman who (Hopefully) will show up on the scene with Mr. Hope’s attitude, endurance, courage, humor and love of country.
Why?
She’d scare all of these modern Soy-Boys into a terror induced thumb-sucking state for the next forty years. Pooping their miserable pampers in their mommy’s basements.
She’d never be able to get a date.
Of course, the single male FReepers would be all like: “What’s her number?”
FReepers would have the ball, in that case.
I have seen that in ArchDigest - I would love to go on an architectural pilgrimage of sorts to Palm Springs sometime; it’s just so vintage.
I liked the way he closed his shows with the line, “Thanks for the mammaries...”
One thing of interest, Johnny Carson could not stand him. Hope had a deal with NBC where he could come on any show, especially The Tonight Show at any time. Carson hated it because Hope invariably came on to plug something and had had his writers give him a number of jokes to tell, then for the most part he left. Carson was very close to Jack Benny and much preferred it and loved when Jack was on.
Me too. And if you are a guy just dont dress too well or you will be hit on all day long. But Id love to tour those mid century moderns. Some are done so well.
I've done that a few times...using image searches. That's how I toured Bob Hope's house and the house from the Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever. When a relative of mine went to Palms Springs on business, she said she almost froze to death. She's from Texas.
