Evergreen State College has announced that it is planning to cut $5.9 million from its budget in an effort to offset a rapidly declining enrollment rate.

The cuts were outlined by President George Bridges in a May 8 memo to the Board of Trustees, and are accompanied by plans to raise various student fees by hundreds of dollars, The Olympian reported last week.

Money quotes:

Acknowledging that “Evergreen can no longer be considered a ‘selective’ college in terms of admission” because it currently accepts about 95 percent of all applicants,

Scrapping the bottom of the barrel. That is a glorified community college

Notably, it also cites a survey showing that 60 percent of first-year, four-year students who enrolled at Evergreen State in Fall 2017 “identified themselves as LGBTQIA.”

They should rename themselves Sodom State College. Get Woke, Go Broke.

Yeah, raising fees will surely be the winning ticket. Losing business? Just raise prices. Works every time. (After all, wouldn’t want to eliminate the “whiteness studies” and “cis-genderness studies” professors.)

That sorry place wouldn’t even rank as a mid level 1920s junior high school.

Evergreen isn’t a college; it’s a Montessori playground for hippy wannabes.

Actually, this raising of tuition rates...only displays itself for the fall semester opening up. The 2019 fall semester? Likely another repeat on the upward swing.

I did a fair amount of reading over the college. This is a place where a d-average high school kid could arrive....get admission....discuss ‘projects’ with the instructors...and graduate in four years. The degree as far as I can see...is worthless. If I were an HR department, or school system...I wouldn’t hire the kid. But it is a place where you could send challenged-people and ‘give’ them a degree.

I wish we could get some kid a ‘scholarship’ via Freerepublic, and just send him up there for four years to video and collect the worthless nature of the whole program.

Oh, they're at it again. And like good little Communist thugs, they've Tripled Down. Three days of racist thuggery this time. What could go wrong?

Zero the budget. Fire the faculty, shut the thing down and try again in five years or so. Or convert it into a trade school. As an institution of higher learning it died a long time ago.

Because of their Day of Kicking Whites Out, they can go to hell. I hope it goes bankrupt and they all go on welfare.

OK - so I’m seeing similar reports about state-run colleges and universities all over the place. This is not unusual - as when the economy is growing and unemployment low - college enrollment tends to lag. It’s actually quite logical.

But here’s the thing - WHY would an “institution of higher learning” not have to abide by the same scale economics and decisions as every other business and service provider? IF enrollment is lower, thus the need for instructional staff and other services is lower - then let go of the surplus staff. What is so hard about it? Whats with the mentality that budgets are ALWAYS suppose to increase, even when you are providing less services or goods?

They can expand their 3 days With No White Students to 3 months with no students if they keep this up.

Actually there are some very good community colleges. A community college is an excellent alternative for a student with limited funds.

...60 percent of first-year, four-year students who enrolled at Evergreen State in Fall 2017 “identified themselves as LGBTQIA.

This should be a great lesson in capitalism for the students. When they insist on self-segregating like this, the population has to be able to support itself. If it cannot, it has to make sacrifices or compromises to sustain itself. They chose not to compromise to attract others, so they are left with sacrificing.

As an adjunct professor at a community college, I would agree with your assessment. Community college can be an excellent alternative for motivated students with limited funds. Sadly I see too many in my classes with plenty of funding and no motivation.

On a related note. I went to high school on the left coast and have personally know 3 Evergreen State graduates. All of them went there as liberals and came out making Mao look like a College Republican.
