Here we go again.
This was my honest reaction when I heard the Roseanne reboot was going to feature a non-binary child, Mark, who plays Roseanne's grandson. But here's the thing about initial reactions: Theyre not always the right ones.
I am the mother of a transgender kid, Kai. She began transitioning at the age of four while being raised in a very conservative, Christian community in the South. When Kai came out as transgender, we received so many death threats and felt so unsafe that we were forced to move.
When Roseanne premiered, there was so much controversy surrounding it that I didnt want to watch it with a negative mindset. In the weeks leading up to the first episode, I hoped beyond hope the show wasnt going to be another attack on the LGBTQ+ community. I knew it would be talking about a population thats at a very high risk of harming themselves. A group that's at risk not because theyre transgender, but because of the way the transgender community is often treated and portrayed through media.
Roseanne Barr has made some very trans-phobic statements in the past, but its my hope that having a non-binary grandson was her way of trying to make that right. It's good that a conversation is being encouraged. Its even better that the show is portraying a child who is gender diverse, and that Mark is being shown as loved and supported by family.
At the same time, I want to ask: Is Mark going to get a nuanced and meaningful storyline, or is this just a token diversity cast member? Are the writers meeting with people from all areas of the LGBTQ+ community to make sure theyre accurately representing them? Its important to remember that people are more than

” She began transitioning at the age of four...”
Abusive mother alert.
I won’t watch Roseanne anyway since her trashing of our National Anthem, so I don’t have any problem with ignoring her.
>>I am the mother of a transgender kid, Kai. She began transitioning at the age of four while being raised in a very conservative, Christian community in the South.
Four year olds should not make life-changing decisions. If Kai had parents and not just DNA contributors who strategically chose a non-gendered name to force this decision on the four year old, then the poor child could have had a normal life.
I Had 4 Boys Until One of Them Told Me She Was Really a Girl
As early as 18 months old, Kimberly Shappley’s son started showing signs he identified as female. Now, the Christian mom shares how she learned to embrace Kai’s transition for her child’s happiness and safety.
By Kimberly Shappley, as told to Breanne Randall
I remember one night when Kai was very young, and I was tucking her into bed. Her legs were cold and, concerned, I lifted the sheets, discovering she had taken a pair of panties off a baby doll and put them on herself. It was constricting her blood circulation and if she’d slept that way overnight, it could have become very dangerous. After that experience, I realized I could no longer ignore something very real about my child: My son, born Joseph Paul Shappley, is a girl.
But it was the South’s fault.
What is the authors point? She has nothing to say here.
Actually, it seems like black people should be complaining about being a token on the reboot. From what I have seen of the show so far, the in-transition carbon-based life form has had some major scenes, but the little black girl on the show has pretty much only appeared in the opening sit-down-at-the table sequence. So you kind of know she’s there, but not why so much. Guess the special interest groups have already set up the priority list.
Ridiculous story from an obviously sick mind.
Earlier in life I had used a dog bone for a chew toy.
I am very glad that my mother did not take this as a sign that her daughter, born a human, was a dog.
IF the mother lifted the sheets and discovered Joseph had taken off all his clothes, would she then realize that her son was a NUDIST? or a FLASHER? Dumb
CONGRATULATIONS
” I hoped beyond hope the show wasnt going to be another attack on the LGBTQ+”
Yeah these attacks are everywhere /s
You don't think Jenner has a loose screw?
I have seen kids wear pull ups as hats. What does that tell you?
:)
Children are like clay. If you mold them in a particular shape, more often than not that is what they will become.
Thats totally different, because she says so....
Yep - sounds like the mom finally found her something to make her feel important...the hell with the kid.
