Cards help people connect on all occasions

Have you ever looked at a card and decided it was too expensive?

Instead of a special card this year, I’m doing Mother’s Day with a hug and a reusable shopping bag to the moms I love. I plan to tell each recipient they are saving our planet by refusing the plastic bags we see all over town that didn’t end in a trash container.

My grandkids enjoyed Valentine’s card exchanges at their school in February. These store-bought Valentines are a real treat since they usually create most of their cards at home on a large table that has art supplies galore, and is always available.

My home may not be stylish, but is full of my grandkids’ artwork. We have become “Gma” and “Gpa” on their cards. Makes their labor with long words a little easier.

There are cards for all occasions, and I enjoy just browsing at card shops. I must report that the cards expressing “getting older” are amusing, but are more fun to send than receive. On my super funny or beautiful cards, I add a sticky notes with my signature and an extra envelope so people can resend them.

I get many comments from those recipients, and some have started doing the same. I hope Hallmark doesn’t read my article.

I save many Christmas cards, and use them to decorate the following year. Many years, I read these cards several times before packing them away.

Birthday cards mean so much when you know the person sending them took time to pick out the card and remember you.I seem to receive several humorous cards at my age. One said they hoped this card found me “still alive”!

I frequently ask my kids to call and save cards for friends, but I await the grandkids’ homemade cards and always display many in frames.

One son buys the same card for all his men friends. This has been going on for years, and always gets a response. I not sure I even want to see the card. powered by

WHF (Whatshisface) has kept a Father’s Day card from our daughter stating on the front that she now “realizes he was always right” and in side in large letters it says “Dammit”!

One son sends Groundhog Day cards, and reminds us this is his favorite movie of the same name and has a real message. So I rented the movie, and understand why he considers the message so important.

“Thinking of you” cards certainly brighten someone’s day. I still go to the mailbox each day in hopes of real mail, not ads and requests for something that has address labels or a calendar attached.

My number one card in order of importance is the “sympathy card.” I usually write a little note in hopes it will be comforting and let the family know they are truly in my prayers. I also read every obituary in the paper and some have facts and information I can relate to. Recently in an obituary of someone unknown to us, I noted the person had been raised very near to my husband’s hometown.

As a young adult, it was hard for me to know or do something for people who were experiencing a loss. I think it’s a sign of maturity to be able to express your sympathy in person or through a card.

At my age, we say goodbye to many friends and think of the family they left behind.

I was buying a sympathy card recently and was surprised to find an economy pack of six cards. It seemed funny at first, but I realized this was the fourth time I was there for a card in two months.

If you are trying to find truly supportive words, practice what you want to say and add a brief personal note. Advice from an unknown author — “do not say a little in many words, but a great deal in a few words.”

Every card and note gets easier. As a hospice nurse I know how meaningful cards and notes can be.

I am truly trying to downsize by giving up many treasured cards I have received over the years. It would give me more drawer space. This is at the top of my list this year.

Just rereading some brings back wonderful memories. Phone messages and computer notes will never replace these cards. It is especially hard for me to throw away frog cards I have received.

Maybe I’ll keep them a little longer and consider them an important part of my over-600 frog collection.

Sending a card for any occasion is an opportunity to connect with people near or far away. Don’t miss an opportunity to support friends. Some cards even have a ripple effect, and reach more than the name on the envelope.

Keeping a few cards on hand and buying “Forever” stamps saves time and helps you respond to many situations, happy or sad! Sending a card or note takes so little effort, but usually has special meaning to the recipient.

If you are short on cards, keep some personal notes on hand. Snail mail with cards for all occasions will always be the best mail for me.

P.S. I was tempted to leave my address just to see if anyone else still sends notes or cards.

All I know is I pay to purchase stuff and I pay to get rid of stuff. What a Bargain!

I’m not really sure what her point is here, but that’s just what every mom wants next Sunday, a reusable shopping bag, which implies up til then she’s been killing the planet.
She is right about one thing, greeting cards have become insanely expensive - it’s not unusual to see a $5+ price tag.

I am a distributor for SendOutCards. About a buck and a half for a card that you choose online and can modify with your own message and small extra charge to add photo. A real paper card that is delivered, not a computer message.

FReepmail me if you want more info. I use them for personal and business. Once the database is created, you can send out Christmas cards to hundreds and it will take just a couple minutes.

I never wanted cards and don’t want a reusable shopping bag. I’d be tickled pink if for Mother’s Day to have the shopping done for me. Or any household chore. Just one. But that’s too much to ask and was already turned down.

Or it implies she’s just an old bag.

Two words: Dollar Tree. Fifty cents for most cards, a dollar for the fancier ones.

Kudos to all who caught the virtue signaling going on here :)

Yes, one reusable shopping bag to a young Mom says so much. I’m sure they are as appreciated as we here suspect :D

The author is probably doling out 2 reusable diapers for births and reusable menstrual products for Christmas.

(insert eye roll here)

Her point? Meh.....Pay someone to write, give them a deadline, and they’ll write.
