Soon, Russian troops will carry new assault rifles into battle. The AK-12 and AK-15, direct descendants of the world-famous AK-47, are set to replace existing rifles and modernize the Russian militarys arsenal.
Russian soldiers currently carry the AK-74M assault rifle. This 5.45-millimeter rifle is descended from the 7.62-millimeter AK-47, which was introduced in 1947. The AK-74 was introduced in the 1970s and modernized to the -M standard in 1991. The Russian Army retains a stockpile of approximately two million AK-74s in different variants.

It’s also likely that the new AK’s have a much-improved design to reduce “barrel climb” to increase accuracy.
The new “improved” versions will probably be more complex and will lack the deadly simplicity and effectiveness of the original. Virtually anyone, anywhere with little or no training could use an AK 47 over and over again. Hopefully the Russians are making the M 16 mistake.
Looks like they’re getting their stocks from Magpul!

It doesn’t look thy have much going for them in that department since the stock is set way to low, instead of behind the bolt and the barrel.
Fake News.
It is not an assault rifle.
Yeah, it kind of is.
“Assault Rifle” is a legitimate term to describe a rifle of intermediate cartridge capable of select-fire. It’s a term used for almost 50 years, but has been co-opted and bastardized by the Left to include any scary-looking weapon.
Regardless, it still has a meaning.
Nice post. Thanks.
The AK 74 5.45 x 39 round has virtually no recoil and muzzle rise compared to other military cartridges.
Still little heavy for what is at 7.7 lbs. A comparable technically updated AR-15/M-16 is about 5.5 lbs with optical sight
They should convert those AK-74s to semiautomatic and sell em cheap in the largest arms market in the world. Id buy one to go along with the Saiga rifle and two AR-15s......I had before the tragic boating accident.
LOL, this is news? The video games have had them for a few years now. The bad guys keep dropping them and you can pick them up as you go along.
We FReepers are probably the world’s worst boaters, so many of us having suffered TBAs.
Working at INITECH..
I still have issues
With my TPS reports!
Maybe the Russians can modernize more frequently, with the world market contributing to sales of "outmoded" rifles.
They don’t work well against strykers.
rwood
were they clip loaded 30 rounders with full-semi assault capability?
do i need a sarc tag?
Do you know what the difference in performance is between the 5.45 and 7.62 rounds?
5.49x39 has a 62 grain 5.45 mm dia projectile with a muzzle velocity of 3100+ fps and 7.62X39 has a 121 grain 7.62 mm projectile with muzzle velocity of 2400 fps.
5.49 x 39 shots flatter and has greater effective range than the 7.62 x 39, has very effective anti ballistic armor performance and is designed specifically for very low recoil impulse to allow accuracy in full auto mode.
The 5.45x39 projectile is designed to deform and tumble upon impact so it's lethality is not as dependent upon impact velocity as the 5.56 NATO bullet so it has arguable superior performance to the current 5.56 NATO round which requires high velocity to work properly
The source article includes a photo of the AK-15: it looks like something you might find over at Gunbroker, selling at a discount because too many of the original parts have been replaced with after-market crap. If general appearance is any indication, this could be the first time in history that a major military has adopted a rifle designed by mall ninjas...
