I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. I’ve seen all of the Star Wars and Star Trek movies, and while watching the kids, even saw a number of Clone Wars cartoon episodes. I’ve seen most episodes of Star Trek, every series, though I’ve barely been able to watch Star Trek: Discovery except the Mirror Universe episodes. I say this so that my criticism is not mistaken for “you just don’t like the franchises.”
And I think modern politics and shifts in storytelling are hurting both science fiction universes.

I’ll list that as a maybe. I’m afraid they’ll take the anti-hero modeled on “Shane” and take him down a few notches per liberal social justice mandates. That he is stupid, weak, or incompetent compared to all the women around him who are so much smarter, better, and stronger than him.
That’s why you can’t find a strong, decent, intelligent father in any sitcoms today unless he’s non-white.
It is why the only smart, competent and strong white guys in most cinema is either a villain or only supported by a diverse cast that has to get all the credit.

As much as I like the originals, the first was a fun B-movie in terms of quality at best, and is utterly absurd to say that ESB was a “jump the shark” moment.
Without ESB and ROTJ, ANH would have been a cult classic at best.
The main problem with the new Star Treks is they blow up the Enterprise in every movie. I still liked them better than the recent Star Wars though.
Agreed. Rey can do everything better than everyone else once she’s in touch with her inner superiority.

The prequels do not even deserve the title “movie”
I could not even get through the first 20 minutes of the SJW releases.

It was the only sequel with any redeeming merit, but it certainly was not better than Star Wars.
I thought Daisy Ridley (Rey) was quite good, and I liked her and her character.
I was uneasy about John Boyega (Finn) at first because I assumed he was the Affirmative Action hire, but I think he did a credible job.
It looks like Rey and Finn are destined for a romantic relationship, so it remains to be seen if they can bring the necessary emotions for that. Previous Star Wars films were just terrible at Romance, namely, Natalie Portman and what's-his-name.
I thought Oscar Isaac (Poe) is not quite good enough for his part. Bottom Line - I have zero emotional involvement with his character. Are Poe and Finn destined to become rivals for the hand of Lady Rey?
Kylo Ren is terrible. The character is unconvincing, and the acting (Adam Driver) is unacceptably weak.
In any event, I still liked the movie, and I watched it twice from beginning to end.
I have heard that “The Last Jedi” is Social Justice Warrior crap.
No, they wouldn't, but that doesn't mean political correctness did not contribute quite a lot to how bad they were.
I don't think female warriors resonate with the 14 year old boy demographic, (which is supposedly the target audience for this sort of stuff) at least not in the way of "I want to be like her."
Boys want to see heroes that they can imagine are them. They want to be inspired by someone for whom they can suspend disbelief that they are not this person doing heroic deeds on the screen.
If Leia would have suddenly popped in a small, soundless pink mist as she got blown out into space during the slow speed chase, it would have improved things.
It seems like I read an article in which George Lucas is quoted as saying he modeled the rebels after the Viet Cong. Are you saying this is disputed?
I'm not saying anything was disputed. I'm saying that there was always politics of a sort in the movies and people always saw politics in the movies.

Is that the only way things resonate? I never wanted to be Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia or even Han Solo, but I still enjoyed the pictures. If enough things get blown up it hardly matters which good guy does it.

Finn’s ideal character arc of dying against the regime was interrupted by Rose’s stupid sacrifice that, if Mary Sue had not come to the rescue, would have killed all of her friends.
After all the hype of Phasma, I would have liked to see more of her than yell, fall to fiery death.
