Did Star Wars Jump the Shark Or Was It Devoured by Parasites?
Liberty Island Magazine ^ | 04/23/2018 | Tamara Wilhite

I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. I’ve seen all of the Star Wars and Star Trek movies, and while watching the kids, even saw a number of Clone Wars cartoon episodes. I’ve seen most episodes of Star Trek, every series, though I’ve barely been able to watch Star Trek: Discovery except the Mirror Universe episodes. I say this so that my criticism is not mistaken for “you just don’t like the franchises.”

And I think modern politics and shifts in storytelling are hurting both science fiction universes.

It jumped the shark after “The Empire Strikes Back”.

“Kylo and General Hux are so laughable as antagonists”

I have to disagree about Kylo Ren. While they did harm aspects of his character, he’s certainly resolved to wipe out the rebels now. I’m actually rooting for him and the Empire to be honest.

You’re right about Hux though. They could have made him into a tyrant like Grand Moff Tarkin. Instead, they made him into a joke.

And there was absolutely no need to kill off Captain Phasma ... they needed to keep her around and make her more evil. Her death was anticlimactic.

Star Trek jumped the shark along time ago with the Voyager series, and has been off the tracks since then.

“Even the prequels are better because at least they aren’t trying to push an agenda.”

You missed the part about “Newt Gunray” (a dig at Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan ... straight from the mouth of George Lucas) and the dispute of trade route taxation :-).

I’m aware that Lucas drew some parallels in the earlier trilogy. But my point still stands that the prequels were much less in your face than the new trilogy which is the worst pandering of all.

Your critique is pretty spot on. Star Wars and Empire were refreshing at the time. Simplistic, feel good, black and white, good vs evil stories with cutting edge for the time special effects - but the timeless, coming of age- novice warrior/mentor story, not the effects, drove the movie.

And then there was Rogue One, so many years later that was....eh, decent.

Everything else was pure crap.

Lucas would have been hailed as a genius if only he had done the proper thing and died early.

Because it's both TV and movies, Star Trek could survive a few lemons.

I don't know if it's still alive now with the new movie cast, but earlier you could ignore whoever was on television and wait for the movie with an earlier cast to come out - or just hope the next television version would be better.

“Star Trek jumped the shark along time ago with the Voyager series, and has been off the tracks since then.”

It jumped the shark with the “Generations” movie actually (I think Voyager came out after that).

I actually liked the ‘idea’ of Enterprise and they seemed to start doing a much better job during the third season, but that series finale was beyond awful and wrecked that entire series for me :-).

I loved the JJ Abrams Star Trek reboot. Yes, it was short on science, but he saved that franchise from doom by making it more of an action flick. I didn’t care for the second one (he earned enough capital to make something special given the success of the first, but they stupidly chose to retell a story everyone knew ... stupid!). The third one wasn’t bad at all.

I have heard rumors that that is the big reveal of the next movie. Maybe not marriage but they will end up together.

The point of Rey was emphasized at the end of VIII: you don’t have to be of certain bloodlines to be a force-sensitive. See the little slave-boy call the broom to himself...and then sweep ordinarily.

Yoda, after lighting up the tree (knowing all the while Rey got the books out) saying something like “she has everything she needs (within her already, as I see it)”.

The point of Leia’s flight? Still thinking about that one. Not ready to dismiss it as a bit of fluff. When she blew out my first thought was “oh, that’s how they’re dealing with Dead Carrie. Good thing they had imagery they could use....” —unlike Mockingjay II, where they had to bring Haymitch to read a letter from Plutarch instead of having Dead Philip just walk in and talk to the girl.

It died from an attack of politically correct Mary Sueism.

Agree with Leia super-powering herself to a coma.

Its a crime what they let Rian Johnson do to the franchise. The whole point of The Force Awakens was getting the light saber and taking it to Luke.

I seriously believe that flipping the light saber was a big FU to JJ Abrams also, as it was his script that made it a big plot point leading up to The Last Jedi.

Then they let them kill off Ackbar in such a off hand manner and made Leia into Supergirl. WTF!!!

The SJW non-sense is overkill to the extreme and it looks like they are dead set on continuing it, so...

“Hardware Wars” is better than the TFA attempts at humor.

That would actually be a resolution and solution better than what the writers would likely do.

The original cast never once appeared on-camera at the same time.

That was just disgusting. I will never forgive Disney for that.

What they did to them in the “plot” was just a big slow-motion murder of them and FU to the fans.

“They killed off Admiral Ackbar”

That was, for me, the straw that broke the camel’s back. So unnecessary.

They are making all the older main characters death anti-climatic. Hell Luke just up and died!

Ackbar
Luke
Plasma

All boring non-descript deaths.
