A scene from the series Space Above and Beyond series pilot. R. Lee Ermey portraying a drill instructor.
Space Above and Beyond lasted one season, but deserved better, I was and excellent blend of SciFi and War story.
Gunny's passing reminded me both of the series and the fact he was in the first episode.

Gunny Ermy was great in that segment but the rest of that was pretty hokey.
Nice that they promoted him to Sergeant Major.

In space no one can hear your scream ... unless it is the battle cry of a United States Marine.

Space Above and Beyond lasted one season, but deserved better, I was and excellent blend of SciFi and War story. I didn't like the politically correct crap of women space marines. I didn't even like the idea of space marines. I didn't like rocket/jet engine style propulsion. Against the alien technology, it really couldn't compete.
The science was horrible in that series, but I watched it anyway because i've always been a big science fiction buff.

First there is clearly far to much PC crap now days, but many a Women pilot have proven their skills and certainly
earned their wings. Tammie Jo Shults, pilot of Southwest flight that blew the engine this is a former Navy aviator who flew F/A-18 Hornets. Then there is Captain Kim Campbell, deployed from the 75th Fighter Squadron during the Iraq war who's A10 took multiple hits while flying a mission over Baghdad. The A10 was so severely damaged she was force to put the plane into manual reversion, which meant she was flying the aircraft without hydraulics. She flew the aircraft home and landed it safely. By the way no hydraulics means no brakes.
Yes there is a lot of pc now days, but there are many a women pilot that certainly
EARNED their wings.

Brought back a lot of memories of getting yelled at and my stint as a drill instructor.

I’ve read that woman are well suited to be snipers. The Russians in ww2 valued them highly. They’re not built to be grunts and hand to hand killers, but they can serve many important roles .

SAAB was a mixed bag.
It was killed off just as it got interesting.

Like many other shows, "Space: Above and Beyond" (SAaB), had potential but was killed because of the usual reasons, most especially Fox Broadcasting being significantly smaller in outlets and audiences. Equally true was the fact that there were some gems in its limited shows.
I most especially loved their Christmas episode (#12 of 23) "The River of Stars" which did an excellent job of juxtaposing the WW1 soldier's Christmas Truce with the 1968 Apollo 8 Christmas Genesis broadcast. While the back-story would need a viewer to learn who and why things are important, any TV Show that also has matters of faith, Shakespeare Sonnets and redemption is far BEYOND 98% of the current dreck found on the 500 channels!

The rank of Gunnery Sergeant was also honorary.

True - but it was the Corps' loss that they never selected him for greater rank.
I was lucky enough to meet him at a trade show in DC about ten years ago. Very personable, friendly, honest, unpretentious.
God rest his soul and comfort his family. Semper Fi, Guns.

It was the Marine Corps’ loss that Ermey only served for 11 years. He received a medical discharge due to injuries sustained during his service.

I still have the recordings on VHS. Do you have all the episodes? I wonder if they are available on disk?
A quick check with E-Bay indicates that they are.
I wouldn't mind seeing some of the episodes again, but not at the price they want for those DVD sets.

SAAB was a mixed bag. Yup.
It was killed off just as it got interesting.
I miss "Firefly" more than I did SAAB. I don't remember more than a few episodes now. I can't recall if it was getting better.
