Actually, yes. A standard wash cycle with detergent followed by a wash cycle without detergent results in much cleaner clothing. It also seems to decrease the wear on that clothing.

I stumbled upon this decades ago when looking for the most efficient way of truly rinsing laundry detergent out of my clothing. The additional detergent-less wash cycle not only removed residual laundry detergent, but it had unexpected benefits.

Of course, "water Nazis" will pop their gourd over this practice.

The team also tested their theory on fabric. They found that a piece of cotton stained with polystyrene latex is cleaned better and faster when it is rinsed with fresh water after being soaked with detergent, than if it is rinsed with the same detergent solution (see figure).

That was my reaction too... who would ever rinse with detergent water?

I do this, because I got a new HE washer, which should be called a GD washer.

Why do they suck so bad nowadays?

With all the options, like extra rinse, extra full rinse, et al, a single load takes 90 minutes, and it doesn't even fill up with water!
