ABCs Roseanne revival settled in last night with a slice-of-life episode focused on parenting after last weeks headline-grabbing premiere tackled President Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the election. The ratings took the inevitable dip but remained impressive 15.1 million viewers and a 3.9 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast nationals at 8 PM last night. Vs. the 8-8:30 PM part of the double premiere episode last week (17.7 million, 4.9/21), Roseanne retained 84% of the audience and 80% of the adults 18-49 rating. It was once again the top program of the night by a mile in both adults 18-49 and total viewers.
or comparison, NBCs Will & Grace revivals Week 2 retention was 70% in total viewers and 67% in adults 18-49.
Last nights Roseanne posted the highest Adult 18-49 rating for any non-premiere comedy telecast in more than two years, since the 12/17/15 episode of CBS The Big Bang Theory.
ABC paired Roseanne with the other blue-collar family comedy on broadcast TV, The Middle, now in its final season. Boosted by Roseanne as a lead-in, The Middle (2.2, 8.3 million) returned up 57% in the demo and up 43% in total viewers from its most recent original two weeks ago, hitting season highs with its best numbers since January 2015.
black-ish (1.5, 5.4 million) was down sharply (-42% in the demo) from last week (2.6, 8.7 million) when the comedy directly followed the highly-rated hourlong Roseanne debut. Still, black-ish logged its second-best numbers of the season. The week-to-week declines carried over to new comedy Splitting Up Together (1.4, 4.8 million), which was down -33% from its debut last week. New legal drama For the People (0.8, 2.8 million) seems to have benefited from the extra sampling on Roseanne premiere night last Tuesday when its demo rating shot up 50% week-to-week. For the Peoples 18-49 rating only slipped a tenth last night.
Elsewhere, NBCs lineup recovered a bit after taking a hit with double-digit drops last Tuesday. The Voice (1.8, 9.3 million), Rise (0.9, 4.5 million) and Chicago Med (1.1, 6.2 million) all rose a tenth.
At CBS, NCIS (1.3, 12.1 million) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.9, 8.5 million), which bid farewell to a cast member, were steady, while Bull (1.2, 11 million) ticked up a tenth in the demo.
Foxs LA to Vegas (0.7, 2 million) inched up a tenth, while The Mick season finale (0.7, 1.9 million) was even.
The CWs just renewed Black Lightning (0.5, 1.5 million) held steady.
ABC won the night in 18-49 (1.8 rating) with the top 2 shows of the night, Roseanne and The Middle. The network topped the 8 PM and 9 PM hours, with NBC winning at 10 PM with Chicago Med. CBS was the nights most watched network with an average of 10.5 million viewers.
I don’t understand why The Middle is still on.
"...Roseanne in second week..."
Well, this is their last season. But I liked it because it was one of very few sitcoms where the dad was not the family idiot. In fact he seemed to be the most normal of the bunch.
It’s ending this year.
I thought her show was on Wednesday nights so I missed last nights episode just as I did her first weeks (I watched it later using FiOS On Demand). I guess Ill watch this weeks show that way again.
The Middle is a very good show
I have watched all 3 episodes. There are plenty of LOL moments.
The stair chair had me rolling last night.
But I’ll be completely honest, Roseanne is the worst actor on that show. She is still funny as can be. Even the cross-dressing 12 year old is smoother than she is though as an actor.
Maybe that is part of her appeal.
Never watched the orignal Roseanne at all, and we watched last night it’s OK.
The Middle has been a family favorite for the years that it’s been on, although this-its final season-is not nearly as good as they tie up the loose ends in order to seal the package. We’ll miss it very much.
The Middle is a good show, but the kids are too old to play kids. Eden Sher who plays Sue is 26.
We like The Middle. I’m sorry it ends this year, but there’s probably nowhere for it to go, plot-wise. It’s not often sitcoms show families going to church as a unit as this did quite often. The church played a big part in the show over the years at times. “Rev. Tim Tom” cracked me up.
Americans don't watch TV the same way we used to. There's an ever-growing number like my wife and I who will wait until there are several episodes to binge all at once.
I saw that show a few times. Those kids get on my nerves and I don’t care for Patricia Heaton in that role. She was much better on Everybody Loves Raymond.
Let me add that even though I liked Heaton on Raymond, I thought she was a nagging, bitchy wife. I think I watched it because Frank and Marie made me laugh so hard.
I didn’t watch it for a long time, and then caught it in reruns. it’s actually a good show - the dad is a normal hard working dude who loves his family; the mom tries hard, but isn’t the solve it all; the oldest son tried to get by on his good looks and sports athleticism, but reality told him different; the middle child, the daughter, is girly, and a middle child; the youngest is ignored, weird, and quirky. It’s got one character that’s homosexual; just the one, not a whole gaggle.
There’s nothing wrong with the show. In fact, showing that everyone makes mistakes, no one is smarter than the other, that the dad is really the head of the house.
What’s your problem with the show?
Whats your problem with the show?
I enjoy it. And I think they were smart enough to end it before it jumped the shark. The kids have grown and this season it looks like they are finishing up the story arcs.
Ok, my bad - I just mis-attributed the snark :-)
Wife and Inliked her on Everybody Love’s Raymond until my wife said “All she does is nag, nag, nag.”. Then we got to where we didn’t like her character anymore.
I notice they’ve added a gay character and talk about transgenders. Sounds like she sold out a little bit.
I agree. The oldest boy should have been written out of the series years ago by shipping his butt off to military school.
