Wow. Did Eric Carmen steal that from Rachmaninoff?
Or was the bridge the Rachmaninoff?
He also stole “Never Fall in Love Again” from Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony in E minor, specifically the third movement.
Certain angle from behind make the keyboard look small... but you can see the delight in her face.
Wow. BEAUTIFUL phrasing. Most importantly....she looked as though she was having an absolute blast!
Yeap and his other hit “ Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” was based on the melody from Rachmaninoff’s 2nd symphony 2nd movement. Eric Carmen had a training as a classical pianist and it shows in the long piano interlude in the extended version of “All By Myself. Carmen got himself into some legal trouble because he thought Rachmanioff’s music was out of copy right but he was mistaken so had to pay royalties to the Rachmanioff estate.
The bit of theft from the second movement of the Second Symphony came from Neil Diamond, who appropriated a chuck of the mid portion of the second movement for "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore." Diamond even kept the original key of C Major.
Horowitz is the master of Rachmaninoff.
Children cannot play soul music because they have not yet developedb deep soul. That comes from pain and suffering.
Romantic music is the original soul music.
Rachmaninoff got it right...and Horowitz did the best interpretation of it.
“All By Myself”
“Full Moon and Empty Arms”
“A Real Live Girl”
All lifted from this ONE magnificent piece of music. LOL
One of my all-time favorites.
(((She has nice phrasing)))
She reminds me of Barbara Dennerlein the way she smiles.

So a supposed “child prodigy” turns great music into soupy trash.
Though no great music lover as a math/science nerdy boy, I grew up on Rachmaninoff: My mother was classically trained, and played him, her favorite, every day. When she wasn’t playing him, she was playing Van Cliburn playning him.
Ironically, I am now a semi-professinal musician (choral, especially period a cappella. Life is strange.
Agreed. And those hands of his. Fortunately, my mother is flexible and fast, so she can negotiate those chords.
Many do not know what a masterful choral composer he was.
Bogoroditse Devo is one of my most favorite pieces, to hear or to sing. I once got to sing it (Bass II) at a major event in the refurbished California Theater in San Jose.
Many otherwise great composers, like Beethoven, did not understand voice leading well for the human voice. Rachmaninoff did.
Van Cliburn, Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony.
He never ‘Stole it’ he gave credit to Rachmaninoff in the liner notes. It was in the public domain in America. He agreed with the estate after he was contacted by them that they would receive 15% of the royalties.
It was in the public domain in America. He never hid the fact that he used the melody.
Thanks for posting this. Beautiful.
Im pleased that the underrated John Miles performed All by Myself. I became a fan of Miles from his work with The Alan Parsons Project.
It was my favorite classical piece as a child. I seem to remember that my mother said she saw Rachmaninoff play in San Francisco.
Also added the Keyword: rachmaninoff (under the article) which brings up six more articles :)
Several songs come from the # 2 piano concerto. “Full Moon & Empty Arms” is the best known and is not done much any longer, but “I Think of You” is done more often. A notable version is Sinatra’s on his “Where Are You?” album.
