During the Korean War, the North Koreans successfully used Soviet U-2 biplanes for nighttime bombing raids against the UN forces. The Soviets had used the U-2 for the same purpose during WWII. Some of these planes exist today, and a few of them still fly.

A successful rock band even took its name from this Soviet biplane.

This may appear to be a good idea until people realize this isn't World War II vintage radar the North Koreans have to deal with. Modern phased-array radar are quite difficult to jam, and all the Americans need to do is mount a bunch of AA guns equipped with the M2 "Ma Deuce" machine guns to shoot them down.

“could reek havoc initially during the onset of a war...”

That must be a really bad smelling airplane.

You’ve never been inside a CH-47 Chinook in August.

It’s already happened

https://theaviationgeekclub.com/incredible-story-air-america-uh-1d-huey-shot-north-vietnamese-2-colt-biplane/

Which is a story of how a UH-1 shot down a N Vietnamese biplane.

IMO, biplanes are WWI state of the art technology that ended in WWII. And by 1967 helicopters were capable of shooting them down.

This article is obviously written by a leftist military master-mindless.

When he referred to the An-2 as “a bit of a tail dragger” was when I became certain that he knew nothing about aircraft.

Oh yeah, I already knew that story.

Now imagine how much more capable an AH-64 is than a UH-1.

How many Stingers can an AH-64 carry? Not to mention that 30mm chain gun is probably tough on a fabric biplane.

Leftist moron military analysis for sure.

It 'reeks' because it is full of NorK special kimchi, made with tree bark instead of cabbage. 😉

I’m thinking an Apache would make a great anti-AN-2 platform

One A-10 Warthog could “reek havoc” with them as well!!🤣🤣🤣

LOL
We still have DC-3s and a single AN-2 hauling cargo here in Alaska - the last of the DC-6s were just retired.

The An-2 is a brilliant machine for rural and non-technical areas - Africa come to mind. While many here love to deride the aircraft of the Old Soviet, they are pragmatic designs for use in ‘undeveloped’ parts of the world.

Least anyone think the AN-2 is a dead design - there is a “bionic’ AN-2 - with turbine power, Fowler flaps and wingtip vortice generators for extreme STOL

There are hundreds of these aircraft still in use around the world and they are still produced. They are cheap and cheap to maintain.

I have a layman understanding of radar but I do have a question. How do the Norks manage to send drones over the border periodically that are undetected. I realize they are small but some of them are somewhat larger although nothing on the scale of an AN 2. I also understand that we may be detecting every one of their drones but we are smart enough not to show our hand.

Never inform the enemy he is making a mistake.

Of course they are, I can't argue against that. But what are the chances that NK has access to those parts in order to keep their own planes flyable? It's quite likely that their antique planes are still on their original tires............

Ah, maybe because China borders North Korea on the North? And China still produces this type of aircraft?

1950's and 60's aircraft? I don't think so...............

But for the sake of argument, let's say they do. S. Korea is armed in the 21st century along with the U.S..

N. Korea is still stuck in the 50's, 60's and 70's..........

With the exception of artillery aimed at S. Korea, anything else they may launch into the air will be destroyed..........NK's air force is an Air Farce...........

18,000+ of these type of aircraft were built. The Poles produced them until 2001. They just had a new variant role out in 2017. I don’t recall where from. This plane has a cult following. Granted the newer AN 2 is not your Grandpa’s AN 2. AN 2 variants are still being produced.
