Former substitute teacher developing gunshot alarm for schools
ABC News ^ | 3/12/2018 | Whitney Lloyd

A former substitute elementary school teacher has developed a gunshot alarm system that would work similarly to a fire alarm inside a school building alerting teachers, students and first responders to an active shooter.

Stacy Jax, a former substitute teacher in Wisconsin, first came up with the idea in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 children dead in 2012.

“When Sandy Hook happened, I really identified with my child being in that classroom or being in that classroom as a teacher, which made it really hit home,” Jax told ABC News.(snip)

Sensors are placed throughout the building that constantly scan for the sound of gunfire, Jax explained. Once a sensor detects a gunshot, the system’s computer can differentiate and confirm that the sound is gunfire and not a different loud noise that is common in a school, like a locker slamming. If a gunshot is confirmed, the system sounds a building-wide alarm that allows teachers what may be valuable seconds to barricade their classrooms or evacuate their students. At the same time, it calls police, providing them with specific information about where in the building the shots were fired, according to Trinity’s website.

“The alarm will be every bit as loud as a fire alarm,” Jax said. “I am hoping it will be a deterrent for a gunman.”

All they do is set up sound collection AP’s which collect the coordinates in their zone and that is transmitted real time.

I thought the first shots were fired outside, but I’m admittedly ignorant to the details. I’ve chosen not to take part in the macabre parade the MSM likes to make of these events.

Ah. Excellent.

They have expanded their function. Used to be just a city-wide gunshot locator but they have apparently upped their game to deal with the new threats.

Good for them!

Shot Spotter might want to revise that graphic - it shows the police responding to the shots by driving *away* from the shooter.

On second thought, that's probably as realistic as one could ask for.

Our school district already has this. It’s even a phone app. Tied directly PAST 911 to the local constabulary.

> (the Shot Spotter works on DB of the signal to range it).

I would think it works more by relative timing from multiple pickups.

Why do you need an alarm when you can hear gunshots?

Not what I remember reading about it when it was first deployed. Could have been different versions experimenting with most accurate locating method.

And been suspended like the SWAT guys were?

If I were a kid again and they had those, I’d try popping a paper bag. That might work.

so what’s that supposed to do if the police sit outside and talk on the radio, and let the guy walk down to Subway to get a sandwich?

This former substitute ain’t thinking this through if ha fails to advise schools to include serious charges to anyone deliberately setting off the sensor by some means NOT involving a gun. I havent been in HS for 42 years but present HS boys with a challenge...

A gunfire detector in a school?

How about using your ears.

Our city has that set up. It is very accurate. Cops get there in three minutes instead of five. So you will only be mostly dead when they arrive.
