MILWAUKEE, WisconsinFive years ago today, on March 6, 2013, two pit bulls raised from puppyhood in a loving home environment killed Daxton James Borchardt, age 14 months, and badly injured his babysitter, Susan Iwicki, whose pit bulls turned on both of them.
The horrific attack started, Borchardt recalls, while Susan was carrying my son at the hip and letting her dogs back in from a potty break. Susans well-raised, loved and cared-for pit bulls ripped my son from her arms. A metal gate was ripped from the gatepost during the struggle. This unprovoked, prolonged, and unstoppable attack lasted an entire fifteen minutes according to Susan and police reports.

The jihadis of pets...
Pitbulls are very much like Muslims.
You never know when they’re going to snap and start killing people.
Think of them as a breed that always wears a bomb belt and you just try to train them to not press the button. Most of them don’t, but...
This one is for you Chet, wherever you are!
After a moment’s thought, I’m typing this anyway:
The father was negligent for engaging a babysitter for his toddler son with two large breed dogs, regardless the breed.
The owner was doubly-negligent exposing the baby to the dogs unrestrained. She should have been charged (I can’t find that she was).
Let er rip.
Daxton. Says a lot about his judgement.
Yes. I agree. The child paid the ultimate price for this.
Yes. However, they were never bred to be pets, which is part of why the specific maulings and deaths are occurring.
Quote: “We use the term pit bull type dog because that is biologically the most accurate term. In order to understand this, you have to look at the biological history of the present day pit bull type dogs. Their history is twofold.
bullpit1-300x198The bulldog: The bull-baiting, bear-baiting, horse-shredding bulldog has existed at least since the reign of Richard III in England (1452 1485), when watching bulldogs slowly torture bulls, bears, horses and other animals to death was considered normal public entertainment. These dogs were also used to hunt wild boar, not only tracking the boar but engaging directly in killing it, and in dogfighting matches where they were pitted against each other in fights to the death. There were no breed clubs to give these dogs fancy names they were called simply bulldogs. The term pit bull was an American variation on the same theme, referring to any of the pit fighting bulldog types.
Until the late 19th century, the only pedigree that mattered for any bulldog was its fighting pedigree the list of kills it had committed on some other bulldog in the fighting pit. It wasnt until early in the 20th century, as dogfighting declined, that the breeders of these dogs sought other ways to sell them. They turned to the new kennel clubs, which had been established to cater to the upper class hobby of breeding dogs for shows. After much lobbying, the 1930s saw the registration and re-branding of the pit fighting bulldogs by various kennel clubs, always with a name intended to hide the types bloody history (eg, changing this molossers name from bulldog to Staffordshire terrier). Since that first deception, many new breed clubs have arisen, dedicated to producing slight physical variation in the fighting bulldog so as to claim a new pit bull type breed all their own (eg, American Bully, Pit Bull XXL, Olde English Bulldogge, American Bulldog).
All of these dogs in fact come from the same limited gene pool, all of them retaining both the physical and the behavioral traits that have always typified the fighting bulldog. Pasting a new breed label on yet another slight variation of the pit fighting bulldog does not change this fact.”
Quoted excerpt from “Why Do We Call Them “Pit-Bull-Type” Dogs”
Neighbors across the street have 2 pitbulls that stay mostly in the house. They also have a 3 year old & are expecting another child. I hope the day never comes when I see police, fire & medics over there.
I take issue with this description that fails to differentiate the working bulldog from what occurred when this trusted dog (which still exists and works today), was bred with the terrier, resulting in the pit bull terrier.
Because of this breeding to create a fighting dog, Americans who bred and worked the traditional "Old White" and other working bulldogs, renamed their dogs the American Bull Dog.
I know of a young couple who have a pit bull and expecting a baby in the near future. They are getting rid of the dog because they arent going to take any chances.
The babysitter was a personal friend of the parents. She was mauled badly in the attack. She apparently had the dogs put down immediately. She is also involved in effort to publicize information about pit bull type dogs with Daxton’s parents, the Borchardts.
Even now, five years later, it is not all that common for the dog owners to be charged.
People like to deny a breed’s genetic traits. I’ve know many good pitbulls BUT I don’t believe they belong in a home with small children. I also don’t think it is a good idea to have more than one pitbull for a pet. Also it is very important to know the history of the dam and sire. I doubt many dog owners have access to such information anymore. It might not matter if you adopt a miniature schnauzer but sure does if you adopt a pitbull or certain other larger breeds.
It was criminal negligence, IMHO.
I would never, EVER knowingly put a small child in proximity to ANY large breed canine to whom it is a stranger (not raised from a pup with the child).
But I know animals.
I equate this to a person who walks off of a curb and gets hit by a car exclaiming, “I have right of way!”
To which the obvious merits observation: Shouldn’t you have chosen to NOT walk into a street assuming the odds against injury favored ignorance of personal safety?
Not denying. Agreed.
What? The dead baby?
My wife’s nephew and his wife had two pits and a two year old. I told my wife, I hope that they never turn on them.
His wife left him and he moved in with his mother along with his daughter and the two dogs. Two weeks later, they tore apart his mother’s old aging 12 year old mid sized dog.
He had them put down. I was glad it wasn’t his daughter that was attacked.
