Mustve been music to the ears of Jake Burwash, Cochise College rodeo team captain, after he was the first saddle bronc rider to complete a ride over the events two days.
That whoop, from the announcer, was only the beginning. The feat earned Burwashs ride 72 points and the first place prize in the saddle bronc competition Sunday afternoon.
Levi Whitley of New Mexico State University (NMSU) finished in second place with 67 points.
On March 3 and 4 Wren Arena on Fort Huachuca was host to the 11th annual Cochise College Rodeo. With the first rounds completed Saturday afternoon, Sundays competitions were championship level rides.
The bareback competition was the first of the afternoon. NMSU Bryce Stifford and Colton Clemens tied for first place with 70 points.
The tie-down roping competition followed. Cochise Colleges Ty Everson took home first place with a time of 9.89 seconds. He was followed by Clay Elkinson, of Central Arizona College (CAC), and Colton Clemens, of NMSU, who tied for second with a time of 11.1 seconds.
The womens first event, breakaway roping, was next. University of Arizonas Halle Dewitt finished first with a time of 3.5 seconds. She had the fastest times on both Saturday and Sunday.
Alexa Smith, of Cochise College, finished in second with a time of four seconds and Emilia Johnson finished in third with a time of 4.4 seconds. Cochises Nichole Lake finished in fourth with a time of 8.5 seconds.
Justin Kibler of Cochise College finished first in the steer wrestling competition. He was able to bring down the steer in 5.7 seconds. It took Wyatt Jurney of NMSU 6.1 seconds a time that earned him second place.
Savannah Montero, 7.3 seconds; Leigh Anne Scribner, 7.6 seconds; and Bandee Tubbs, 8.2 seconds were the top three finishers in the goat tying competition.
Devri Priest finished in fourth with a time of 8.4 seconds. Smith finished tied for fifth with time of 8.6 seconds.
Clay Elkington and Cole Sherwood finished the team roping competition in first with a time of 6.5 seconds. Cashe and Cody Burnside finished in second (6.8) and Tyler Muth and Jacob South finished in third (8.7).
In the barrel racing event Lakota Bird finished first (18 seconds), Cochises Marckee Belliston finished second (18.06) and Kallie Brannon finished third (18.33).
The final event of the competition was bull riding. NMSUs Justin Neil was the top finisher with 79 points. Wyatt Betoney and Whitley tied for second with 70 points.
