What's the oddest, most "exotic" dish you've eaten at a restaurant?

In my case, I'd have to say either whale at a restaurant in Iceland, or fried crickets when I was in Zambia.

The whale was delicious. The bugs....not so much.

I was at that restaurant.
I remember thinking “I’m glad that’s not a cobra! Uh I think it’s not a cobra.”

Goat stew with beans and rice, in Jamaica. Soul food. In Aruba I had caviar for the first time. I really liked it. In Louisville, KY I had frog legs. Almost like chicken.

Canned smoked octopus. The toothfeel was like something manufactured by B.F.Goodrich.

Went on Safari in Kenya back in the 70’s, the Lodge had a Smorgasbord Brunch of just about every animal on the Plains.
Ate as much as I could of everything, as I remember there was a sweet sausage that I found the most appetizing and I think it was Crocodile.

Stateside the most exotic is probably Turkey Testicles

Me either. There’s enough delicious food that I don’t have to try, and see if I like, weird stuff.

As a 3rd grader in 1957, my dad was stationed in Spain in the military. We would travel around Spain and Portugal on the weekends to get to see as much as we could while we lived there.

We were in a hotel restaurant in Malaga on the SE coast of Spain during a weekend trip. I was just learning Spanish and looked at the menu to see if I recognized anything.

Ah ha! Pescado. Fish. I ordered the fish and when it arrived on my plate, it looked a little like breaded fish sticks. Boy, were they good....

....until I noticed some small circles peaking out from the breading. Confused, I looked up at my parents who were laughing at my predicament.

They told me what I had ordered were breaded squid tentacles.

Suddenly, as a nine year old, those "fish" sticks didn't seem so yummy. I couldn't eat any more and was lucky I didn't upchuck right there at the dining room table.

As an adult, I have eaten octopus and squid many times on trips to Mexico and enjoy both. But as a young kid back in 1957....YUCK!

I’ve eaten snails straight from the beach, same beach, conch fried stewed and in cervchi, all caught by us and fixed by us. Also barracuda, smoked and grilled. Our friend ate it raw.
