California areas advised to evacuate ahead of potential mudslides

Thousands of residents in a Southern California county where 21 people died from mudslides in January were advised on Wednesday to leave their homes, ahead of a rainstorm that officials said could again trigger a cascade of mud and rocks.

The warning, which is one step below a mandatory order, affects about 30,000 people in Santa Barbara County, said Kelly Hoover, a spokeswoman for the county sheriff's office.

"If at any time people feel threatened, take immediate action. Do not wait for a notification," the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said in a written statement.

The latest warning covers areas along the Pacific Coast and the foothills, including the affluent communities of Montecito and Goleta. It follows criticism of Santa Barbara County officials that they did not adequately warn residents of the danger ahead of the January mudslides.

Have been monitoring the Yakima/Rattlesnake slide. Geologists indicate it could collapse tomorrow or 10 years from now. They have covered it with seismic counters etc.

Not sure that all of these ‘disasters’ are anything new, just that reporting and communications are constant and wide ranging.

God bless

This is a compilation of videos showing some of the most horrendous landslides throughout the world. (Yakima is just the editor’s point of reference)

Well, thank you very much, for letting me exercise my common sense judgment. Do I have to provide notice after I’ve evacuated??

They know there are fire and mud slides yet they continue to build where they shouldn’t. Not too bright.

Not only the mudslides in Santa Barbara County, but the fires in Santa Rosa in N Calif.

I saw a number of people being interviewed in shelters who clearly said: “But NO ONE CAME TO MY HOUSE TO TELL ME TO EVACUATE”. I kid you not. Adults smart enough to earn he $$$ to own nice home & they need to be lead by he nose to evacuate.
