But of course we do know some things for sure, we could start with young Otto Warmbier and many defectors.

You could take the original Bloomberg story and write it about the US, changing only the names and places. Aren’t we in the midst of a massive brouhaha about sexual services for advancement in the entertainment industry? There’s plenty that goes on here in the US that qualifies as sexual slavery, human rights abuses, etc., the very things that are portrayed as the dark and scary essence of NK.
Even down to the detail, about the athletes being taken to the capital and finally being able to see a big city and eat decently for the first time, and being sent to school thereafter for a “moral education”, you can seamlessly substitute the experience of a young poor black athlete here.
Throw in that one of three people quoted is an actual spy, that one of the authors is a Japanese grad of Columbia, and I begin to suspect “intelligency agency insert” is the origin of this story.
