It could be a coincidence. It may not be.
I pulled this stunt on my stepmother this very year for Christmas, and had to point out the gag to more than one person who read it.
To set this up i must give a prologue. My stepmother had a few flannel shirts that belonged to my father that she absolutely HATED. She forced me to take them, and in doing so told me that she was sick of seeing them. In particular, one flannel shirt my father always wore on Christmas, colored with white, green, and red. Makes sense right?
I took the shirts. And for almost a decade i’ve worn that shirt on Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day. This year, i stopped the tradition. I turned that shirt into a throw pillow for her couch. Yes, i will never wear that shirt again...but it’s absence during the holidays on that couch will be ammo i shall use for the rest of her days.
In the pocket of that shirt i wrote a poem that read as follows:
Back again into your home
Ever in your sight,
Sent out into the world to roam
Under the sun so bright.
Returns this christmas boomerang
Ever present in our lore,
To strike such as a serpents fang
Once the moment comes once more.
Donned every year to much dismay
Repulsed our mother was,
Its legend grew each christmas day
Now it’s holiday faux pas.
Killing tradition is never easy
Youngsters might not hear the tale,
Of the shirt that made our mom so queasy
Underneath its comic veil.
Relinquishing it is her christmas gift
Off of my back to stay,
Vanquishing our christmas rift
And to slowly fade away.
Leaving you a memory though
That is the highest art,
I’ve turned it into a pillow throw
Now to keep next to your heart.

She’s a huge “A Christmas Story” fan. She loved it, and i won Christmas.
