According to Constantine it was. He had it coincide with Mithra, the Sun God, and celebrated it on December 25th. At least that is what Eusebius, the contemporary Historian spoke of. Eusebius had a man crush on Constantine and spoke of how he was able to weave the Roman diety into the Christian culture. At least that is what he reported. I suggest that you read “Eusebius-The Church History, by Paul L. Maier to learn more about the early Church Doctrine. (Not a hit piece, just a statment of Constantine’s history stated by someone who knew him personally.) (In my honest opinion.)
