Imagine looking into your irritated eye for a pesky eyelash, only to pull out a translucent, wiggling worm nearly a half inch long.
I looked at it, and it was moving, recalled 28-year-old Abby Beckley of Grants Pass, Oregon. And then it died within about five seconds.
Now, imagine doing that not once but 14 times.
Thats what Beckley endured over a three-week period in August 2016. Her story, published Monday as a case report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a historic one:
This is only the 11th time a person has been infected by eye worms in North America, explained lead author Richard Bradbury, who is the team lead for the CDCs Parasite Diagnostics and Biology Laboratory. But what was really exciting it that it is a new species that has never infected people before. Its a cattle worm that somehow jumped into a human.

“Jumped”?
Like in the Olympics?
Yes, that IS exciting!!! NOT!
In her case, it was apparently a Broad Jump...
I’m sure he sees it as job security.
G1!
I can hardly wait to get my own parasitic eye worms... BTW - What does parasitic mean? sarc
Some people have weird ideas about what is exciting.
Parasite: something that lives off or sucks the blood out of someone/something else.
Worm: spinless creature that knows no useful purpose....so that being said,...
A parasitic worm HAS to be a Liberal! :-)
I won’t sleep well tonight...
To paraphrase Arthur Dent: "Ah, this is obviously some strange usage of the word exciting that I wasn't previously aware of."
There were several doctors examining my eye, and at first, they were a bit skeptical, because who comes in and claims they have a worm in their eye? Beckley remembered. I am thinking to myself, Worms, please show up, because sometimes they would go behind my eye and under the eyelid, and you couldnt see or feel them anymore.
.
If they’re in her eye, then they’re also in her brain!
.
That part caught my eye too
Might have to change the song lyrics from The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out to The worms crawl in and gather about.
