‘Game of Thrones’ Creators to Write, Produce New ‘Star Wars’ Series of Films
Variety ^

Posted on 02/06/2018 8:53:23 PM PST by BenLurkin

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to write and produce a new series of “Star Wars” films, Disney announced on Tuesday.

The new series will be separate from the main episodic Skywalker saga that started with “Star Wars: A New Hope” and is slated to wrap up with 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX.” It will also exist independently from a Rian Johnson-helmed series that was announced last year.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

It also comes at a time of transition for Benioff and Weiss. “Game of Thrones,” their sprawling fantasy epic, will end its run on HBO in 2019.  The show has been a massive hit for the premium cabler and has been hailed by fanboys and critics alike for its ability to mix spectacle and political wrangling.

...

Disney did not give a timeline for when these new Benioff and Weiss-penned films will hit theaters. On an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the two men had approached the studio with an idea a while ago.  Even though the duo made their name in television, Iger said they were not interested in doing something on the small screen.

“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are ‘Star Wars’ based,” said Iger. “To my knowledge they didn’t express interest about a series.” Iger was mum on any plot details except to say that the writers and producers are “…focused on a point of time in the ‘Star Wars’ mythology.”

Nah I’m done after the last Jedi, AWFUL movie, killed the franchise.

There will be nudity.
And a dwarf.
Ok, the dwarf part is regular old Star Wars.

I hope not. After making the mistake of watching Westworld on HBO, I never want to see another naked person again.

Star Wars has devolved into serial comic book like videos featuring stock characters and tired progressive themes. Since most 15-19 year olds are not able to read critically and require gaudy visual stimulation to be entertained, the franchise will remain profitable.

This could be a trlogy about the Old Republic everyone has been clamoring for. I’m excited.

And the Last Jedi was awesome. Get over yourselves.

Not sure you’re serious about The Last Jedi.

It wasn’t just bad. It was painfully bad.

I am in agreement with how bad the last Star Wars was.

Episode iX is going to be awful, you just know it is. R2-D2 and C-3PO will have cameos, Chewbacca will roar and the Falcon will fly around. Yay, been there done that.. nostalgia filled never come back again.

I truly loved Rogue One, great stand alone flick on its own. I have good hopes for Solo due to it being a stand alone as well.

After this story arc ends, and it can’t end soon enough, I think they’re just better off doing Star Wars themed movies that are but aren’t connected like the Bond series.

Instead of quantity, they might want to work on quality. After the prequels, I was glad when I heard Disney had taken over the franchise, and ‘The Force Awakens’ was certainly better than any of the prequels. But ‘Rogue One’ was simply boring and ‘The Last Jedi’ was as bad as any of the prequels - at some point, all of these bad movies are going to overcome the nostalgia many of us feel for the first two movies.

There are many REALLY good Star Wars books that would make excellent movies, ( The Order 66 series comes to mind), but Disney doesn’t already own the rights to them, and declared all of them no longer a part of the Star Wars sagas.

Asked my wife, after we say The Last Jedi, what she thought of the movie. Same story, just different characters. Even the CGI effects are starting to look the same. Both of us thought the movie was booring.

There was a Star Wars comic book that ran for many years. It was published by Marvel which is now owned by Disney as is Star Wars (now).

But rather than adapt these decades old yarns of cisgendered privilege, they want the brand name and nothing else.

And I watched the Solo Cup movie trailer yesterday. I will be avoiding that turkey about the Millennial Falcon Wonder Teens.

Psst, they are no longer making Star Wars films for you or anyone alive when any of the original trilogy came out.

It’s like when Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were brought to the screens around 1980.

They weren’t adapting these franchises for the people who read the comic strips in the 1930s or watched the serials in the 1930s and 40s.

We are over 40 years since the release of Star Wars now.

It’s a brand name and the continuity has been scrap for modern trends.
