So you want to visit a East Bay Regional Park? (San Fran Bay Area)

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is a special district operating in Alameda County and Contra Costa County, California, within the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area. It maintains and operates a system of regional parks which is the largest urban regional park district in the United States. The administrative office is located in Oakland.

The EBRPD spans 120,000 acres with 65 parks and over 1,200 miles of trails. Some of these parks are wilderness areas; others include a variety of visitor attractions, with opportunities for swimming, boating and camping.

EBRPD: "We acquire, manage, and preserve natural and cultural resources for all to enjoy now and into the future. Our parks are ideal for healthful recreation and environmental education."

What do you think about when you want to go to a park? Beautiful setting? Stunning forests? Bright sunshine? Fresh air? Gorgeous birds and animals? Exercise on the miles of trails?

Of course those are the things all of us normal people think about when planning a visit to a park. But the people at EBRPD have other things in mind. When you sign up for a use permit, the most important information you have to provide about yourself is...

I was struggling to fill out their form this morning in preparation for a ten mile hike. I initially thought I was MALE, but on further reflection, what if I fell off a cliff? Would I want my rescuer thinking I was male? Hmmm...am I "Other"? Sometimes my wife would put me in that category. I was so triggered by this form that I retreated to my safe space, quivering and crying so much that I missed my hike.

Just kidding. It was a spectacular 10 miler to the top of 2,400 foot Mission Peak from the back side in Sunol. The winds at the top of the peak were blowing a constant 30 - 40 mph with gusts to the mid 50s. I almost got blown over three times.

So, what say you? How would YOU fill out the form to describe yourself?

I'll have to get up to Tilden and the others...haven't been there in ages since I took my kids fishing on San Pablo Reservoir and on the steam train.

I think I'm heading up to Mare Island this weekend for the 22nd Annual San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival. Some good wildlife and bird watching up there.

This misses the real point, which is 120,000 acres of parklands in an urban area.

Almost all of it FAR from MLK Blvd.

There are many Freepers that can attest to the wondrous beauty of these parklands.

Haven’t seen rain for two weeks and looks like the next three are dry, too! We’re getting our April weather now. I hear the climate is changing a bit.

Mrs. POF and I hiked the “Grand Loop” around Diablo a couple years ago in the spring. That was a great hike.

So you want to visit a East Bay Regional Park? (San Fran Bay Area)

Why does that headline imply that we mere citizens must somehow qualify the enjoy the right to share public regional parks anywhere?

Are the custodians "more equal" than the rest of us?
