Revisiting One Of The Best Political Ads Of All-Time

Happy Groundhog's Day, everyone!

I wanted to refocus our attention for a moment on a political ad from the 2016 campaign.

Robert Downey Jr. and a bunch of unknowns and has-beens put together an ad in support of Hillary (who is never mentioned) urging people to register so that a dude will appear naked in his next movie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRp1CK_X_Yw

Wow, that's *supposed* to get me motivated? I guess if the target audience are homosexuals and women, this was a good move but, honestly, the ad spends three minutes sending mixed messages about why, exactly, we should care to vote.

TOPICS: History; TV/Movies
KEYWORDS: actors; famous; hollyweirdo; politicalad; robertdowneyjr; trump
The answer ad by the Trump campaign that it spawned is not just genius but humorous, pointed and amazingly prophetic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTMhCCJXTYE

The response ad thanks Downey and the others for sharing their viewpoint and then slyly moves into reasons not to vote for Hillary. Sure, anyone can make a mistake and click to delete their emails 30,000 times. It could happen to anyone!

The tone is lighthearted but not lewd like the original. It keeps focused on what's really important in the election.

Then the spokespeople (not sure whether these are actors or not since I don't recognize any of them) offer a quick synopsis of what a vote for Trump could get us. Looking now in hindsight, those spokespeople weren't lying.

Listen:

"I almost voted for Donald Trump because he knows how to turn things around."

"Wants to secure our borders"

"protect our religious freedoms"

"wipe ISIS off the face of the earth", says a woman.

"off the FACE of the earth!," reinforces another woman.

"Let American companies compete on an even playing field"

"...and keep more of our hard-earned money," adds a young African-American.

They conclude that, if you listen to Hillary, such desires are "deplorable", capitalizing on perhaps the biggest misspeak of the entire campaign, similar to Romney's 49% comment in 2012.

Were you listening to Trump's State Of The Union address? Can you literally just check things off that commercial's laundry list above and see that Trump has either done these things or advanced the ball significantly on each subject?

And that's just the first year!! Then you add on the Gorsuch nomination, pulling out of the Paris Accord and the Climate Change nonsense, the sweeping changes to federal departments that were handcuffing free enterprise rather than encouraging it, the slow unraveling of ObamaCare, etc.

Is he finished? No. There's a lot more to do, particularly on health care and immigration, doing so under the constant harassment of the media, the Democrats and the Deep State Washington bureaucracy.

But I'm impressed at what he's accomplished so far after just a year in office.

If these spokespeople were to re-shoot this commercial now, they would conclude,

"Thanks, Donald Trump."

"Thanks, Donald Trump."

"Thanks, President Trump... for doing what you said you'd do."

Thanks, Mr. President, for a fantastic first year in office. May the next three be just as wonderful.

Thanks for something.

It was a brilliant retort to a leaden, ham-fisted Hillary ad.

The best ad of all time in any category was the VW ad that said, “If Teddy Kennedy drove a VW he would be president today.”

the famous actors are so shallow... they had to inject profanity into it.

G-d Bless Donald Trump and those working to shine the light of decency on our corrupt government.

The best ad of all time in any category was the VW ad that said, “If Teddy Kennedy drove a VW he would be president today.”

That was a good one. Believe it or not, I was watching a BBC documentary about Chappaquiddick the other night and they posit that Teddy wasn't even in the car when his car plunged into the water. It's an elaborate story with three key witnesses which, pieced together, show drunken Teddy was trying to have sex with Mary Jo in the car when an officer returning home saw them parked in the middle of the road. The officer gets off work at Midnight which shows Ted was lying about hitting the water around 11:15, not long after guests saw he and Mary Jo left the house. Ted returned to the house - dry and on foot - and had an aide drive him another direction to the ferry dock. Mary Jo - drunk and alone - sped off the wrong way to the unlit bridge and hit the turn too fast, causing the car to plunge into the water. While there was no autopsy, the diver that recovered MJK's body noted there were no bruise or cuts on her body, which would have surely been true if she was in the front passenger side as most presume. It's consistent with if she were in the driver's side of the car where her body would not have been crushed by the weight of the sinking car against the bottom. Since the Ferry stopped running at midnight, Teddy jumped into the water and swam back to Edgartown unaware that Mary Jo had drowned until the following morning. So why did he confess to being in the car and moving up the timeline? Because he couldn't admit he was cheating on his wife - which would have torpedoed his career - so Gallant Ted claims he was just giving Mary Jo a ride back into town and that he bravely fought to pull Mary Jo ashore once the car ran off the bridge. He could fight off charges of vehicular negligence and involuntary manslaughter more easily than he could fight off charges of infidelity. The BBC documentary claims he was scared into leaving Mary Jo in the car to fend for herself where she panicked and took the wrong turn while Teddy hoofed it past a fire house and two lit homes (if he had wanted to get help for a drowning passenger) to go back to the party house and talk an aide into providing an alibi. So the VW might have saved Mary Jo. It might have made matters worse for Teddy.
